The Port of São Francisco do Sul and Van Oord Signed the Service Order for the Dredging and Maintenance Process to Begin

After the start of the dredging works and the service order issued, the Port of São Francisco do Sul will be reestablished DHN. The investments made for the dredging work at the Port of São Francisco do Sul are estimated at over 36 million reais.

The dredging work is budgeted at around R$ 36 million and, according to SCPar, was contracted with savings of about R$ 15 million. The start of the work is scheduled for next January, with an execution period of 160 days. The total volume to be dredged is 1,988,718 cubic meters.

The dredging technique consists of cleaning, dredging, widening, clearing, removing, or excavating material from the bottom of rivers, lakes, seas, bays, and channels.

Environmental dredging aims to remove a surface layer of sediment contaminated by organic and inorganic compounds, without resuspending these contaminants. Strict procedures are applied to both the dredging operation and the transportation and handling of the dredged material, as well as its disposal.

“The acts addressed at today’s ceremony in São Francisco do Sul represent important achievements for the port, which, as a port authority, has the responsibility to ensure navigation safety and infrastructure access to the waterway canal”, said SCPar President Fabiano Ramalho during the service order signing ceremony.

How to Advance Dredging in Brazil?

In Brazil, unfortunately, there is a lack of partnership, both between governments and with the private sector, especially at the Port of São Francisco do Sul. People do not realize that it is a win-win relationship. In the Amazon, pilotage has taken over the survey of river and tide bottoms at the mouth of the Amazon River. The result? A draft gain of 40 centimeters – an extra ten centimeters represents a thousand tons or 65 extra containers per vessel. If we did not make these and other investments throughout the country, the cost of exports would increase, and everyone would lose.

Cooperation between stakeholders can also help overcome conflicts that arise in a dredging process. Once again, I will cite a positive experience of pilotage in this direction. In August, we simulated, at USP, the entry of larger bulk carriers in Santana (AP). We gathered representatives from the Public Ministry, the Executive, the Legislative, the Navy, and the Port Authority during the simulations. We brought everyone to the debate and demonstrated the necessary precautions to ensure the operation was as safe as possible. As a result, the report was a consensus, and we went from ships with a 55,000-ton cargo capacity to over 80,000 tons.
