Dredging of the São Lourenço Channel in Niterói Will Require Investments of R$ 200 Million and Allow Larger Vessels Access to the Shipyards
After the Niterói City Hall announced it will invest R$ 200 million in the dredging of the São Lourenço Channel, the project has now completed another phase, utilizing resources from oil royalties related to the exploration of the Lula Field.
The city hall has just obtained the license from Inea (State Environmental Institute), and the works will increase the draft (depth) from seven to 12 meters, enabling large vessels to access the shipyards along Avenida do Contorno in Barreto, near the entrance to the Rio-Niterói Bridge.
With the works on the channel, which has become an old ship graveyard in Niterói, the shipyards will be benefited, as larger ships will be able to access the shipyards located there.
The causes of the silting in that area of Guanabara Bay were the landfills made during the construction of the Rio-Niterói Bridge in the 1970s.

After the release from Inea, it will still be necessary for the Niterói city hall to secure approval from INPH (National Institute of Hydrographic Research), which will be the agency responsible for the project and will supervise the dredging.
Naval Hub and Fishing Terminal
The investment from the Niterói City Hall aims to recover the naval hub in the region, but it will also be important to put into operation a fishing terminal that cost R$ 10 million to the federal government and has never operated.
The terminal was inaugurated by then Minister of Fisheries Marcelo Crivella in 2013 and occupies an area of 7,200 square meters near the Rio-Niterói Bridge, which is currently abandoned, but which the city hall hopes to recover through a public-private partnership (PPP).
