Wave Energy: Technology Takes a Leap with Unprecedented Achievement in Portugal
The wave energy technology has made a significant leap in Portugal, with Eco Wave Power preparing to build its first megawatt-scale facility. This advancement promises to revolutionize the production of clean and sustainable energy.
If you think you’ve seen it all when it comes to renewable energy, it’s time to rethink. Eco Wave Power, a Portuguese company, is raising the game of wave energy to a new level. For over a decade, they have been perfecting their system that converts the movement of waves into electricity, and now they are ready for a megawatt-scale installation.
Wave Energy at a New Level
The basics of the system haven’t changed much: floaters attached to coastal structures move with the waves, activating hydraulic pistons that compress fluid and generate energy. The beauty of this technology lies in its ability to operate 24 hours a day and adapt to adverse conditions, with floaters that can be raised during storms, ensuring safety and efficiency.

Eco Wave Power Delivers Results
This is not the first time that Eco Wave Power delivers results. In 2016, Gibraltar was home to the first grid-connected installation, which operated for six years before being transferred to a project in the United States. Israel also joined the mix with a grid-connected installation in the Jaffa port last year. And there’s more to come: Turkey signed a deal for a 77 MW station, but it’s Porto, in northern Portugal, that is stealing the spotlight with the first megawatt project.
The Big Step in Portugal
Announced in 2020, the Portuguese project finally received the green light in March of this year. The founder and CEO of Eco Wave Power, Inna Bravermann, celebrated the official start of construction of the first commercial 1 MW station. And it doesn’t stop there: the site will also house a museum and educational center for wave energy, the first of its kind in the world.
This innovative space will be located under the breakwater, open to the public, and will serve as a hub for education and awareness about wave energy. Construction is expected to begin in the next two years, with ambitious plans for expansion to four locations, reaching a maximum capacity of 20 megawatts.
Wave Energy Has Enormous Potential
Now, we can’t just applaud without critiquing, can we? Wave energy has enormous potential, but it’s important to keep an eye on the challenges. Maintenance and installation are marketed as simple, but the truth is that operating in marine environments always brings surprises. So, will this new phase really deliver everything it promises?
The project has already faced delays, with approval only coming in 2023, even after the announcement in 2020. Expectations are high, and Eco Wave Power needs to demonstrate that it can overcome challenges and maintain financial and operational sustainability in the long term.
Portugal is on the right path to lead a new era in clean energy production with wave energy. The unprecedented achievement by Eco Wave Power promises to not only revolutionize the sector but also educate and inspire future generations. With a critical eye and another on the future, let’s closely follow this journey and hope that the waves bring favorable winds to the energy market.
