With a historic investment of £6 billion, Prague is set to undergo the largest railway construction in its history! The iconic central station, inaugurated in 1871, will be completely modernized with two new tunnels, an underground station, and strategic connections to revolutionize mobility in the Czech capital. If you’ve ever set foot in Prague, you know the charm this city holds. But hold on: this historic railway center, which has been around since 1871, is about to undergo a massive railway renovation, costing £6.1 billion (€7.4 billion).
The idea? To build two new tunnels, an underground station, and completely transform mobility in the city. While the station is already one of the busiest points in Prague today, in a few years it will become a benchmark for modern railway transport.
A Transport Hub with History That Needed an Upgrade!

But What Will This Railway Renovation Bring New?
Well, first of all: two brand new tunnels, which will cross underneath the current station. One will be located just below the existing underground passages , while the other will be even deeper. And check out the impact: each tunnel will be able to support up to 16 trains per hour in each direction!
An underground station will be built beneath the existing one, improving connections between different railway services. And there’s more: the expansion will facilitate access to new stations spread throughout the city, such as Karlín, Wenceslas Square, Karlovo Náměstí, and Florenc.
Less Confusion, More Mobility: How Will This Improve Day-to-Day Life?
If there’s something that irritates any passenger, it’s the endless back and forth of people and trains mixing together, frequent delays, and long lines. With this modernization, all of that will change.
The separation of regional and long-distance services will make the station more organized. New passages equipped with escalators will be created, facilitating movement between platforms. Everything is designed for those who use the train daily and don’t want to waste time.
But It’s Not Just About Transport, the Railway Renovation Goes Beyond!
And here’s something interesting: this renovation doesn’t only focus on the railway aspect but also on the passenger experience and revitalization of the surrounding area. In addition to the tunnels and the new underground station, the project includes the creation of a cultural zone and a brand new square, bringing a new meeting point for residents and tourists.
Just imagine: arriving in Prague and being welcomed by a vibrant, modern, and lively space? It sounds like a dream, but it will soon be a reality!
When Will All This Happen?
According to Express, the renovation has already been approved by the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic, and the Správa železnic (SZ), responsible for railway infrastructure, is leading the project. Now, the mission is to make it all happen on time (which, let’s face it, in projects of this size, always has its challenges).
And for those who are already curious, the good news is that the first impacts of these changes should start being felt soon. In the coming years, traveling by train in Prague will be faster, more practical, and more comfortable.
