Discover How Innovative Surfboards Are Being Made From Recycled Wind Turbine Blades. A Sustainable Solution That Unites Technology, Circular Economy, and High Performance in Sports!

Sustainable Surfboards: How Recycled Wind Turbines Are Revolutionizing the Sport

Currently, sustainability is gaining more and more space in the sports industry. Thus, surfing is keeping up with this transformation. With the increased environmental awareness, material recycling has become an essential trend. Now, a surprising innovation catches the eye: surfboards made from recycled wind turbine blades.

What Makes This Innovation So Important?

The global company ACCIONA, in partnership with professional surfer Josh Kerr and his brand Draft Surf, is redefining the standards of the sport. In this way, the project utilizes decommissioned wind turbine blades to produce surfboards. This promotes the circular economy and gives new meaning to the reuse of materials.

Additionally, the project is part of the Turbine Made campaign, which seeks sustainable solutions for disposing of the enormous wind turbine blades. The first recycled surfboard was made from materials sourced from the Waubra wind farm located in Victoria, Australia. This board was handcrafted on the Gold Coast.

According to the site CicloVivo, the initiative was launched in February 2025 and has already attracted interest from various sectors of the sustainable industry.

The Challenges of Recycling Wind Turbine Blades

Wind turbines play an essential role in generating clean and renewable energy. However, their blades have a limited lifespan. After about 20 years of use, these fiberglass structures need to be disposed of, creating a significant environmental challenge.

Thus, repurposing this material for surfboard production helps to prevent waste accumulation and contributes to a more sustainable future. According to Renewable Energy World, by 2035, millions of tons of wind turbine blades will need recycling alternatives to avoid negative environmental impacts.

How Do Recycled Boards Compare to Conventional Ones?

The sustainable surfboards from ACCIONA combine high-level performance with environmental benefits. Some of their features include:

  • Durability and Strength: The recycled fiberglass from wind blades enhances the flexibility and strength of the board.
  • Sustainability Without Compromising Performance: The fins, made from repurposed fiberglass, ensure stability and speed.
  • Innovation in Design: The deck of the boards incorporates strips from the recycled blades, increasing control and resistance of the board.

Moreover, these boards do not lose quality compared to traditional models. This happens because the repurposed structure retains its essential properties. Therefore, surfers can trust the sustainable performance without sacrificing performance.

Circular Economy: The Positive Impact of This Innovation

The reuse of wind turbine blades is not limited to surfing. Furthermore, ACCIONA collaborated with the fashion brand El Ganso to produce sustainable sneakers. It is also investing in the construction of a blade recycling plant in Spain, set to begin operations in 2026.

In the next 10 to 15 years, the volume of decommissioned blades is expected to grow significantly in various countries. For this reason, this innovation becomes even more necessary. The commitment to the circular economy and responsible management of renewable energy waste strengthens this initiative for a greener future.

The Future of Sustainable Surfing

The recycled board project proves that technology, sports, and sustainability can go hand in hand. Thus, this trend paves the way for new ecological solutions. Therefore, it encourages the reuse of materials and the reduction of the environmental footprint in surfing.

If you are passionate about surfing and sustainability, keep an eye on this green revolution! After all, boards made from wind turbine blades show that innovation and respect for the environment can go hand in hand.
