In The Pre-Salt, In The Santos Basin, Petrobras Will Allocate The FPSO Carioca – The Largest Unit In Complexity And Oil Production Volume
The Sépia field, part of the onerous assignment of the pre-salt of the Santos Basin, will start production in August by Petrobras. The FPSO Carioca, which will be responsible for production, has left the Brasfels Shipyard in Angra dos Reis, heading to the Santos Basin (the platform will be Petrobras’ largest, both in terms of production volume and complexity). About The Sépia Field Operated By Petrobras In The Santos Basin
Sépia is one of the areas of the onerous assignment of the pre-salt of the Santos Basin. On December 17, the government will auction – for the second time – the excess volume of oil for the project, along with the Atapu field. Petrobras has already expressed its right of preference and will be the operator of the area with at least a 30% stake.
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, has already indicated that the government’s expectation is that competition from other companies in the auction will be to act in partnership with Petrobras. In an interview with CNN, Bento says, “No company will enter this auction without Petrobras’ participation, because Petrobras is already producing in these fields. And it is considered the most qualified oil company to operate in deep waters.”

The FPSO Carioca
The production capacity of Petrobras’ unit is 180,000 barrels of oil per day, equivalent to approximately 8% of the company’s oil production. The FPSO Carioca can also process 6 million m³ of natural gas per day, featuring a processing plant of 40,000 tons for oil treatment, gas processing, and gas and water injection into reservoirs.
This will be the largest platform in operation in Brazil in terms of complexity, and when it reaches peak production, it will also be the largest unit in terms of oil production. Owned by Modec, the unit is chartered by Petrobras to operate for 21 years in the Sépia field in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin. The construction of the FPSO began in 2017 in China, and important stages of the construction process of the platform were carried out in Brazil, with local content. Two modules were built at the Brasfels shipyard in Angra dos Reis, generating approximately 400 direct jobs.
Petrobras expects to invest US$ 46.5 billion in oil and gas production in Brazil by 2025. Currently, the company has 21 platforms operating in the pre-salt, which are responsible for 70% of the company’s oil production. The FPSO Carioca is one of 13 new platforms from Petrobras that will go into production in the pre-salt from 2021 to 2025.
