Reports of Abusive Prices for Renting Chairs, Umbrellas, and Beach Portions Explode on Social Media Since the 27th, with Tourists Reporting Charges of Up to 200 Reais per Chair and 150 Reais per Pastry in Arraial do Cabo, Balneário Camboriú, Búzios, and Other Crowded Destinations This Brazilian Summer.

Since the 27th, when reports of exorbitant bills at beach shacks began to go viral on social media, so-called abusive prices have come to symbolize a summer of exploitation for those who just wanted to rent a chair, order a pastry, and enjoy the sea peacefully.

From north to south of the country, tourists report prices of up to 200 reais for a chair with an umbrella, 150 reais for six pastries, and simple portions nearing 200 reais in destinations such as Arraial do Cabo, Balneário Camboriú, and Búzios, raising a red flag about the cost of going to the beach.

Chairs at 200 Reais and Pastries at 150 Spread Across the Sands

In recent weeks, reports from outraged tourists have begun to list concrete examples of how much it costs today to simply sit by the sea.

In Arraial do Cabo, internet users report charges of 200 reais for a single chair with an umbrella, a price that many consider incompatible with the service provided and with the average income of families traveling together.

A similar situation is described in Balneário Camboriú, where visitors claim that the combination of an umbrella and a few chairs reaches the same 200 reais, causing a leisurely afternoon to weigh heavily on any group’s budget.

At the same time, men and women who usually bring children to the beach complain that, in these scenarios, the abusive prices end up driving away precisely the crowd that contributes most to informal commerce on the sands.

Beach Menus with Portions of Up to 200 Reais Shock Tourists

In addition to structural rentals, the menu of foods and beverages has also become a source of astonishment.

A photo circulating on social media shows a beach menu in Búzios with 190 reais for a portion of fish bait, 150 reais for six pastries, and 200 reais for breaded shrimp.

For many consumers, seeing luxury restaurant prices for dishes served at plastic tables, on the sand, is proof that abusive prices have exceeded any reasonable limit.

In the comments, there are plenty of reports from people who gave up ordering portions or shared a single dish among several people to try to lessen the impact on the final bill.

When Summer Leisure Becomes Luxury for the Few

With chairs, umbrellas, and portions in this price range, what was once an accessible activity begins to transform into a luxury experience for a select few.

Families traveling with children and the elderly point out that, at many points along the coast, the cost to set up a minimum comfort structure quickly exceeds the weekend budget, especially when adding drinks, food, and transportation.

There is also a psychological effect described by tourists who say they feel embarrassed when trying to negotiate or refuse services on the sand, fearing they will be poorly treated or embarrassed in front of other beachgoers.

The result, according to the reports themselves, is that many people prefer to reduce their time spent on the beach or seek out emptier stretches, away from the lines at more expensive shacks.

Pressure for Transparency in Prices and Oversight on the Waterfronts

In light of the flood of testimonials, calls for greater transparency in service charges and more oversight in the most competitive beach areas are growing.

Tourists advocate that all prices be clearly visible on menus and signs before any consumption, avoiding unpleasant surprises when it comes time to settle the bill and reducing room for disputes about what was or wasn’t agreed upon.

Consumer protection agencies often remind that customers have the right to clear and prior information regarding prices, and that unexpected increases can always be questioned when they constitute excessive advantage.

On social media, suggestions range from taking photos of the menu to sharing detailed experiences, helping others identify possible abusive prices and better plan how much they intend to spend at the beach.

And what about you, have you ever stopped enjoying the beach or changed your shack upon encountering abusive prices that seemed like a bad joke when it came time to pay the bill?
