With New Alternatives Emerging to Save on Electricity Costs, The City Hall of Manaus Sanctioned a Bill for the Installation of Solar Panels Throughout the City, Aiming to Ensure More Savings and Sustainability in the Capital
The City Hall of Manaus recently sanctioned a Bill that guarantees the installation of solar panels throughout the city during this year. As of this Tuesday (04/26), the project’s aim is to reduce electricity costs and achieve savings of up to R$ 6 million over the year. Additionally, the project will promote an idea of sustainability, and if positive results are achieved, it is expected to further expand the use of such systems.
Bill Guaranteeing the Installation of Solar Panels Is Sanctioned by The City Hall of Manaus, Which Will Now Coordinate the Sustainability and Electricity Cost Savings Project
The use of energy from renewable sources to reduce electricity costs is an increasingly present reality in the national territory today, and with the aim of saving millions with this resource, the City Hall of Manaus announced a project to install solar panels throughout the city, aiming to harness the great potential that the region has for the production of this resource.
Thus, the City Hall will carry out the installation, throughout 2022, of nine photovoltaic generation plants with a total estimated capacity of 45 megawatts and, with the completion of the solar energy project, intends to save R$ 6 million per year on electricity costs. Law No. 2,870/2022, which was sanctioned this week, ensures that the services for the implementation, operation, and maintenance of the mini-plants will be granted to a private company from the region.

Although it did not disclose which company will be responsible for the project, the City Hall of Manaus stated that the initiative will be made through a special purpose vehicle in the form of a limited liability company or a corporation, thus ensuring a specific timeline and well-defined rules within the agreement. The Bill had already been analyzed by various segments of the state administration, but after a favorable opinion from the Finance, Economy, and Budget Committees, as well as the Constitution, Justice, and Drafting Committee, it was approved within the city.
City Hall of Manaus Is Projecting Savings of Up to R$ 6 Million on Electricity Costs Over the First Year of Operation of the Solar Panels
The high potential that the city has for solar energy generation will be well utilized with the installation of solar panels and will bring a series of benefits to the region, including more environmental commitment and sustainability and, primarily, reduction in electricity costs. Thus, city technicians estimate that the system utilizing sunlight could generate a minimum savings of 10% per year, equivalent to more than R$ 6 million in the initial phases of the systems, with room for expansion.
In this regard, the Mayor of Manaus, David Almeida (Avante), commented on the initiative and the importance of the project for the city, stating that “Considering the favorable potential of the region for solar energy generation, the Municipal Executive aims for a minimum savings of ten percent on the electricity bill for the City Hall of Manaus’s consumer units while also shifting to the use of clean, non-polluting, and renewable source energy.”
Now, the expectation is that the City Hall of Manaus will make a decision on which company will manage and carry out the construction of the solar panels for the reduction of electricity costs, and that the announcement will be made soon.
