New York Mayor Declared State Of Emergency And Imposed Curfew From 9Pm On Sunday 22 Until Noon On Monday To Face A Rare Magnitude Snowstorm

New York City, with more than eight million residents, will restrict movement in light of an impending violent winter storm. According to CartaCapital with information from AFP, the announcement of the curfew was made on Sunday 22, effective from 9pm until noon on Monday. Authorities advise avoiding non-essential travel and emphasize that conditions will worsen throughout the night.

The emergency plan includes the closure of streets, roads, and bridges to general traffic, affecting cars, trucks, scooters, and electric bicycles. Only some trips considered essential and urgent will be authorized during the duration of the measure. The city government also ordered the closure of schools and colleges on Monday.

The weather forecast indicates significant snowstorms overnight and throughout Monday, with precipitation rates that could reach 5 to 8 centimeters per hour at the peak of the storm. Strong winds may knock down trees and power lines, increasing the risk of blackouts in different neighborhoods.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), about 54 million people are under the influence area of the winter system. Travel may become extremely dangerous, especially along the I-95 corridor, from north of Baltimore to Boston, via New York and Philadelphia.

Curfew In New York, Hours, Restrictions And Closed Services Explained

The curfew announced for the metropolis was applied from 9pm this Sunday until noon on Monday, according to CartaCapital with information from AFP. During this period, there will be a closure of streets, roads, and bridges to general traffic, including passenger cars, trucks, scooters, and electric bicycles, with permission restricted to essential travel.

The schools and colleges in New York will be closed on Monday, and the city reported that it will mobilize resources to support people in need of shelter. The main guidance is to minimize movement, prioritizing safety and clearing roads for emergency and snow removal teams.

Snowstorm Forecast Of Up To 70 Cm And Strong Winds, Regional Impact From Mid-Atlantic To New England

The NWS warned of heavy snowfall, violent winds, and the possibility of coastal flooding, emphasizing that blizzard conditions can materialize quickly from Maryland to the southeast of New England. At the peak, snow may fall at a rate of 5 to 8 centimeters per hour, drastically reducing visibility and covering roads in minutes.

For New York, 45 to 60 cm of snow is expected, with the potential to reach 70 cm in specific areas. Local authorities warned that the worst of the weather is expected between Sunday night and Monday morning, with travel potentially impossible in sections of the I-95 corridor.

The impact is not limited to the city. CartaCapital reports that much of the northeast coast is on alert. In Boston, Mayor Michelle Wu declared a snow alert and stated that the event could have historic magnitude, with a forecast of up to 60 cm of accumulation in the city.

In New Jersey, the AFP text reproduced by CartaCapital reports that Governor Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency starting at noon on Sunday, to expedite resource mobilization. However, there is a discrepancy in titles, as official records indicate that the Governor of New Jersey is Phil Murphy, and Sherrill is a federal congresswoman, according to public databases of the State.

There is also inconsistency in identifying the Mayor of New York. The article mentions Zohran Mamdani as mayor when announcing the curfew, although Mamdani is a state assemblyman in New York. The official website of the New York City Hall indicates Eric Adams as mayor, which highlights an attribution error in the original text. Nevertheless, the measures and weather alerts described remain valid, according to the NWS.

Flights Cancelled, Energy Risks And Recent History Of Deaths Due To Extreme Weather In The Region

The immediate effects are already reflected in air travel. According to the specialized website FlightAware, more than 3,500 flights were cancelled this Sunday, with New York airports among the hardest hit. The trend is for more cancellations and delays as the storm moves northeast.

The NWS warns of winds capable of causing tree falls and damage to the grid, which increases the chance of power outages in urban and suburban areas. Authorities recommend basic supplies, battery charging, and attention to official communications throughout the event.

In recent context, a severe storm at the end of January had already battered the region and, according to authorities cited by CartaCapital and AFP, resulted in more than a hundred deaths. The history reinforces the appeal for the population to avoid travel and follow emergency instructions until the weather normalizes.
