In Addition To Minas Gerais, ArcelorMittal Plans To Invest In Other States
“We are finishing a study, which is already very advanced, in the final phase, to make large investments in Brazil. I would say these are substantial and robust projects to start at the beginning of next year, most of which will come to Minas Gerais,” emphasizes the CEO of ArcelorMittal.
“We are a company with roots in Minas Gerais, we will complete 100 years in December and our premise is to continue in this direction of being ahead of its time, remaining innovative. We believe in Brazil, we know there are challenges, but we want to be here for another hundred years,” highlights the CEO, who states he is not frightened by the water crisis affecting Brazil. “It did not affect ArcelorMittal, we believe the government has taken action. At least 95% of our energy consumption is renewable. We are a large consumer, but we are also a large producer,” points out the new president while mentioning the Tubarão plant in Espírito Santo. “We have several renewable energy projects, wind, solar, whether in long-term contracts or in partnership,” he emphasizes.

Investments In Sustainability-Focused Projects
With the goal of becoming even more sustainable, among the new CEO’s goals for ArcelorMittal is the group’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2050. The aim is to reduce CO2 emissions in Brazil by 10% by 2030. Globally, the group has already committed to investments of around R$ 1.9 billion for the development of carbon-neutral technologies. “Our emissions in Brazil are already lower than the global average because two-thirds of production comes from scrap which generates less emissions. But still, we want to reduce even more,” he says.
According to De Paula, the ArcelorMittal group also intends to accelerate the inclusion of women in the company’s workforce. By 2030, the goal is to have 30% female representation in all areas of the company, including operational, administrative, and leadership positions. Currently, out of approximately 17,000 employees at ArcelorMittal Brazil, 14% are women. In the operational area, 7% are women, and in leadership positions, 9%.

ArcelorMittal will resume operations at the steel mill in the Barra Mansa (RJ) unit in the second half of this year. The project will also require investments of approximately R$ 19 million for maintenance and refurbishing of equipment necessary to start production. The resumption of activities at the steel mill, which has been idle since 2019, is driven by the increase in market demand for steel and economic growth prospects for the country. With the reactivation of the area, it is estimated that 100 new direct jobs and 50 indirect jobs will be created.
According to the world’s largest steel producer, present in over 60 countries, the focus of investments at the Barra Mansa unit is to meet, primarily, the growing demand of the domestic steel market. The investments will be directed toward operational safety and technology projects for the equipment, with resources to restore the entire capturing and filtering system of the steel mill and ensure better environmental compliance.
