ArcelorMittal announced yesterday, Tuesday (10/08) that rolling mill 3 at the João Monlevade unit, in Minas Gerais, will start operating from January 2022. The start of activities at the plant is motivated by market demand and by the perspectives of economic growth. In all, the resources allocated to rolling mill 3 add up to R$ 580 million, considering the investments to implement the equipment and the disbursements for its activation. Reactivation of the rolling mill at the plant, in Minas Gerais

The equipment has the capacity to produce 1 million tons/year of steel, however, production will take place gradually and in line with market demand. Rolling mills 1 and 2 at the plant at the João Monlevade unit, in Minas Gerais, will continue to develop special steel at the unit, which currently has an installed capacity of 1,2 million tons of steel per year. 

For the operation of rolling mill 3, built in 2015, ArcelorMittal was waiting for improvements in market conditions. The purpose of the rolling mill is to guarantee full customer service. The strong demand for steel, especially in the advance of civil construction, and the economic indicators made it possible to operate the rolling mill.

New jobs that will be generated by ArcelorMittal with the operation

The estimate is around 120 new jobs with the start-up of the rolling mill at the plant in João Monlevade, an initiative that reinforces the importance of the unit for the business of the operation in Brazil. In all, the resources allocated to the rolling mill add up to R$ 580 million, considering the investments to implement the equipment and the disbursements for its activation. Of this R$580 million, more than 90% of the investment was spent on installing the equipment in 2015. The other 10% is for activating the equipment.

Gustavo Werneck, Gerdau's chief executive, said in a conference call that the company will expand its hot coil rolling capacity and the production of structural profiles at its mill in Ouro Branco, in the state of Minas Gerais, in investments that have as a reference a total of US$ 500 million. The capacity of the hot coil (HRC) rolling mill will be 250 tons per year, while that of the profile machine, a product that Werneck said Gerdau is the only producer in Latin America, will be 500 tons per year.

In addition to investments for the plant in Ouro Branco, Gerdau also announced an investment plan of R$ 6 billion in the state of Minas Gerais over the next five years, for modernization, technological updating and expansion of its local operations. With the contribution, the company reinforces its commitment to the sustainable, economic and social development of the state and will generate more than 6 direct and indirect jobs.

Two important investments in expanding steel production will take place in Ouro Branco, in Minas Gerais, where the company has its main production plant. The unit will have the annual production capacity of hot rolled coils increased by 250 thousand tons/year, with the start of production scheduled for the beginning of 2024. In addition, Gerdau is expanding the production of structural profiles by 500 thousand tons/year, doubling the current capacity, and with the start of production projected for 2025. With this, Gerdau aims to continue serving the growing consumption of the consumer sectors of these products in Brazil and Latin America.
