ExxonMobil, the largest oil company in the US, is drilling a new offshore area in Brazil that could produce 1 billion barrels of oil and gas, said its partner Murphy Oil. The announcement was made this Wednesday (3/23) by Murphy Oil, one of Exxon’s partners in the block, reports Reuters. Note: ExxonMobil’s press office informed the CPG portal that it does not make estimates regarding its production or projects.
If the exploration is successful, it would be Exxon’s first oil discovery in Brazil as an operator.
This is the first exploratory well of nine blocks that the three companies jointly hold in the Sergipe-Alagoas basin. “The Cutthroat area has a gross resource potential that ranges between 500 million and 1.05 billion barrels of oil equivalents”, he said.

The environmental license, issued on February 17, allows ExxonMobil to drill the well in ultra-deep waters of the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin. The license released by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) authorized the American oil company to start its oil and gas exploration campaign in the area, covering up to 11 wells, valid for five years.
The wells to be explored by the giant US oil company are located in blocks SEAL-M-351, SEAL-M-428, SEAL-M-430, SEAL-M-501, SEAL-M-503, and SEAL-M-573.
Drilling at the Cutthroat prospect is being carried out by the West Saturn rig from Seadrill. The nearest well to the coast will be located 67 km from the municipality of Brejo Grande, and the depth of the pioneering well is expected to be up to 3.8km.
