CEFET – RJ launches Brazil’s First EAD Master’s Degree recognized by MEC! The Federal Center for Technological Education Celso Suckow da Fonseca (CEFET/RJ) announced the selection process for the free Professional Master’s Degree in Energy and Society (PPGES) for the academic year 2025. There are 20 spots available in eight strategic research areas, such as sustainability, smart cities, biofuels, and more. This is a free program, offered online (EAD), with in-person moments.

Offered in the online (EAD) format, the free course includes in-person moments, usually on Fridays and Saturdays. The workload covers theoretical classes, seminars, group discussions, and practical assessments. Participants conduct research linked to one of the eight themes of the program.

There are 20 spots available for the free course, distributed among the following research areas:
- Biorefineries Based on Waste and Circular Economy (3 spots).
- Use of Biofuels and Renewable Hydrogen in Transportation (3 spots).
- Education and Energy (2 spots).
- Sustainable Management of Freight Transport (3 spots).
- Computational Strategies for Smart Cities and Industry 4.0 (0 spots in this cycle).
- Transport and Sustainable Development (3 spots).
- Environment, Sustainability, and Interdisciplinarity (3 spots).
- Perspectives on Energy Generation and Use (3 spots).
The hubs and in-person meetings are centralized at the CEFET/RJ unit in Rio de Janeiro.
How Does the Selection Process Work?
Ensure the MEC certificate. The selection process consists of three stages: registration, document analysis, and classification. The analysis will be based on:
- Research proposal.
- Updated Lattes curriculum.
- Academic transcript.
There are reserved spots for affirmative actions: 25% for candidates who are black, brown, indigenous, or quilombola, and 5% for people with disabilities . The evaluation also includes proof of English proficiency, either through certification or exam.
What Are the Requirements to Participate in CEFET RJ Courses?
To enroll in the first EAD master’s degree recognized by MEC, you must have a bachelor’s degree in any field (undergraduate, licentiate, or technologist). A research plan aligned with one of the program’s themes is also required. Access to the internet and availability for in-person meetings are essential criteria.

- Registration: 12/13/2024 to 01/14/2025.
- Announcement of Approved Registrations: 01/20/2025.
- English Exam: 02/08/2025.
- Final Result: 02/21/2025.
- Enrollment: 02/24/2025 to 02/27/2025.
- Start of Classes: 03/17/2025.
