Internal Memo Reveals Serious Failures in Fiat Toro 2.0 Diesel Vehicles That Led to a Drastic Decision by Mineradora Vale.
Mineradora Vale announced the permanent ban on the Fiat Toro 2.0 diesel from its fleet. The decision was motivated by recurring issues of sudden engine shutdown while the pickup was in motion, which posed a significant risk to the safety of the company’s operations and employees. This information came to light following an internal memo from the mining company.
With a fleet that exceeds 3,000 vehicles, including pickups, utility vehicles and passenger cars, mineradora Vale highlighted in the document that several measures had been attempted to mitigate the issue. However, shutdowns continued to occur, including within the mines where operations require maximum safety. The memo also emphasizes the lack of formal technical feedback from the manufacturer, even after repeated contact attempts.
“Vale adopts strict fleet control and management measures to minimize potential risks. The safety of individuals is the company’s absolute priority,” stated the mining company in an official note. In addition to replacing all Fiat Toro 4×4 diesel units in use, the company also decided to prevent any new vehicles of this model from being incorporated into the fleet, even when sourced from rental companies.

The Other Side of the Issue: The Response from Stellantis

After the issues at Vale, the portal Quatro Rodas contacted Stellantis, the manufacturer of the Fiat Toro, who acknowledged having analyzed some of the problematic units and stated that contamination by ore in the diesel might be one of the potential causes of the failures. The company also pointed out alterations in the original characteristics of the vehicles, such as the use of non-genuine parts and damage to the fuel tank nozzle.
One specific case revealed the misuse of diesel in the ARLA 32 tank, a fluid essential for reducing pollutant emissions in diesel vehicles. According to Stellantis, this behavior may have exacerbated the mechanical issues.
“All of these elements directly or indirectly influence the proper functioning of the vehicles, potentially leading to the inconveniences reported in the mining company’s memo. Stellantis remains available to contribute to the better use of the product,” the company declared.
Safety First
The decision by mineradora Vale to ban the Fiat Toro 2.0 diesel underscores its commitment to the safety of workers and the mitigation of risks in high-complexity operations. Even being a model widely used in the market, the problems reported by the company highlight the importance of technical alignment between manufacturers and corporate clients, especially in such demanding operational contexts.
Meanwhile, the case also draws attention to the relationship between harsh working conditions and vehicle durability, raising questions about how manufacturers and companies can work together to prevent similar situations in the future.
