The new model featured a distinctive appearance that initially raised doubts even within the company itself.
The horizontal headlights were designed to be thinner, giving it a more aggressive look, and were connected by a chrome trim with the Honda logo at the center.
The front bumper also received a new shape, projected forward with a single central opening for the fog lights.

The most economical version of the Honda Civic included ABS brakes, dual front airbags, power steering, air conditioning, three-point seat belts for all occupants, split rear seats, a radio with CD player, and power windows, locks, and mirrors.
The more expensive version added a CD changer for 6 CDs, fog lights, digital air conditioning, and a multifunction steering wheel with paddle-shifters.
Both versions came with a special key for valets that did not allow access to the trunk.
