With Onion Production in Santa Catarina Accelerating, the New Crop Indicates Higher Supply, Good Regional Productivity, and Market Strategies Focused on Storage for 2026

The onion production in Santa Catarina gains strength in this initial phase of the crop and stimulates the field with positive projections for the coming months, according to a report published.

The harvest has started at a steady pace and, according to official data, the state is expected to deliver a volume higher than the previous cycle, driven by productivity gains in traditional hubs and by climatic conditions that favored plant development.

The first harvested lots are being primarily directed to storage, as a strategy adopted by many farmers to achieve more advantageous prices throughout 2026, a period when national supply historically decreases.

In various regions of Santa Catarina, the expectation is that the combination of field technology, proper management, and storage structures will contribute to even more consistent results during the next quarter.

Onion Productivity in Ituporanga Advances and Reinforces Harvest Expectations

Indicators reveal that the predicted growth for the state, estimated at 7.30%, equivalent to 40 thousand additional tons, is primarily due to improved performance per hectare.

In Ituporanga, the largest state production hub, productivity increased by 10.04%. In Rio do Sul, the increase reached 11.03%, while Canoinhas recorded 8.09%.

These results reflect farms in good condition, currently at the fruiting stage. According to technical analyses, the cycle has progressed favorably, supported by suitable weather and well-conducted management.

The planted area in the state grew only 1.41%, reinforcing that the increase in production is directly associated with productive efficiency.

The onion production in Santa Catarina continues to depend on technical developments in the field, a crucial factor for sustaining supply in the new cycle.

Onion Harvest Storage Guides Strategy and Prices for 2026

The price paid to producers has remained stable since June 2025, when the 20 kg bag was quoted at R$ 30.29.

In wholesale, the average value recorded was R$ 41.06, representing a slight increase of 9.49% compared to September.

In light of this scenario, a significant portion of the initial harvest is being directed to storage, a common practice among farmers seeking periods of lower supply for commercialization.

The available storage structures in the state allow for the stocking of a good portion of the harvest, enabling future sales with better margins.

The onion production in Santa Catarina is directly aligned with the strategy to preserve quality and regulate supply until the first quarter of 2026.

This period tends to show gradual appreciation, with the possibility of more attractive prices due to the natural decline in national availability.

National Onion Market Remains Supplied with Direct Impact on Producers’ Decisions

In the Brazilian scenario, October marked an atypical behavior: the country ceased onion imports, something that had not occurred in this month since 2007.

The interruption is due to strong supply from the Cerrado, whose harvest extended until early November.

This situation coincided with the advance of the Santa Catarina harvest, creating a high supply environment in the country.

For producers, this context reinforces the importance of commercial strategies that consider stocks and seasonality.

The onion production in Santa Catarina is expected to gain relevance in the coming weeks, especially when national supply begins to drop, opening space for appreciation.

The Santa Catarina harvest continues until mid-January, maintaining the pace of new volumes entering the market.
