Eletronuclear Drives Green Future With Clean Hydrogen and Seeks to Extend Angra 1’s Operation Until 2044. Eletronuclear’s Advances in Green Energy Production

Eletronuclear is revolutionizing the field of sustainable energy with its innovative project at the nuclear plants of Angra dos Reis, in Rio de Janeiro. The focus? Clean hydrogen production. Committed to decarbonization and sustainability, Eletronuclear plans to produce 100 tons of this eco-friendly fuel annually, leveraging the safe and environmentally responsible operation of its nuclear facilities.

Expansion and Applications of Clean Hydrogen

The project is a milestone in the advancement of sustainable energy production in Brazil. Besides not generating negative impacts on the environment, it has the potential to expand to other coastal regions, thanks to the use of seawater in the production of clean hydrogen. With the completion of Angra 3, Eletronuclear will increase its capacity to 167 tons of clean hydrogen per year, marking a significant step toward reducing the country’s carbon footprint.

Innovation continues with the sustainable production of clean hydrogen as a byproduct of the seawater electrolysis process, which already occurs at the plants. This technique not only avoids any contact with radioactive materials but also utilizes an abundant natural resource on the Brazilian coastline, without relying on freshwater. Eletronuclear has established a strategic partnership with the Itaipu Technological Park and Furnas to analyze the feasibility of this approach, which promises safe implementation and long-term environmental and economic benefits.

The application of clean hydrogen goes beyond simply generating energy. Eletronuclear plans to demonstrate its utility in the residential villages of Angra dos Reis and Paraty, providing energy generated by fuel cells. This will provide an energy consumption offset not only for the administrative buildings of the plants but also for homes in local communities. The company’s vision does not stop there; the sustainable production of clean hydrogen could also fuel hydrogen vehicles, opening new pathways for energy independence and immediate economic gains.

This pioneering project positions Eletronuclear and Brazil at the forefront of sustainable clean hydrogen production, contributing to a cleaner and greener energy future.

Renewal and Sustainability in Angra dos Reis

The quest for sustainable clean hydrogen production advances alongside efforts to prolong the operational life of the Angra nuclear plants. According to the state-owned company and CNEN, the license renewal process for Angra 1 occurs in meticulous stages, adhering to the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Essential for the extension, safety assessments are crucial. “The decisive milestone for the long-term licensing of Angra 1 will be the third periodic safety reassessment in December 2023,” emphasizes Eletronuclear. CNEN is already reviewing the necessary documentation and expects additional documentation for 2023.

Expert Luiz Pinguelli Rosa, with a distinguished career in the nuclear field and former president of Eletrobras, underscores the complexity of extending the lifespan of a nuclear plant, comparing it to the precision of a clock and emphasizing the need for equipment replacement and in-depth analysis of the reactor.

In addition to planning the extension of Angra 1 since 2002, Eletronuclear has taken concrete measures such as replacing steam generators and replacing the reactor’s pressure vessel lid, highlighting the state-owned company’s commitment to safety and innovation.

With Angra 1 and 2, the nuclear park generates 2,013 megawatts of capacity, essential to meet the energy demand of Rio de Janeiro. This effort aligns with the vision of clean hydrogen as an energy vector of the future.

  • License extension for Angra 1 according to international safety guidelines.
  • Commitment to safety through the updating of critical equipment.
  • The vital role of nuclear energy in the energy matrix of Rio de Janeiro.
  • The potential to increase the contribution to Rio’s energy demand to 50% with the extension and activation of Angra 3.

As Angra 1 prepares for a possible operation extension, Eletronuclear continues to strengthen its position as a pioneer in sustainable production. Nuclear energy not only provides a substantial portion of energy to Rio de Janeiro but also serves as a stable platform for innovation in clean hydrogen, highlighting the synergy between traditional and renewable energy.

The energy generated by the Angra nuclear plants is more than just numbers: it represents a strategic transition to cleaner energy sources and a response to future energy demands. At the same time, Eletronuclear is dedicated to exploring the potential of hydrogen as a revolutionary energy alternative, contributing to a more sustainable future.

Eletronuclear’s commitment to the renewal of Angra 1 and the production of clean hydrogen reflects a significant investment in sustainability and technological innovation. As the state-owned company advances in these areas, it not only extends the lifespan of its facilities but also strengthens Brazil’s role in the global energy landscape.
