Most automakers have shut down production because of a shortage of semiconductors. With this, the company claims that the production of a shift at the factory was also impacted. The Metalworkers Union is negotiating with the company and proposes lay off in the unit to maintain jobs.

Currently, Gestamp, a supplier to the multinationals Volkswagen, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Fiat and General Motors, has 1.200 workers in Taubaté

The Metallurgists Union discussed the matter with the workers in a meeting on the 24th of October. “It will be inevitable not to have layoffs because of the demand in the two largest volumes at the factory, which are parts for Volkswagen and General Motors. We are talking about a smaller number of dismissals and application of lay off already for November”, said Santos, who is also a Gestamp employee.

The company currently has 1.200 workers in Taubaté. The factory currently operates in three shifts from Monday to Friday, but the pace should slow down in the coming days, informed the union representative. Regarding the application of a Voluntary Dismissal Plan (PDV) in the unit, he stated that the company, unlike automakers, does not have the cash for it.

Both assemblers, General Motors and Volkswagen, maintain production units in the region where Gestamp is installed. VW de Taubaté, throughout the year, promoted a series of stoppages and production adjustments due to the lack of chips in its lines.

Gestamp stated that due to the stoppages due to a lack of semiconductors, which affect the entire world, the company needed to make adjustments to the factory's staff.

“The shortage of semiconductors is a global problem that affects the different markets in which vehicles are produced and does not just affect our industry. At Gestamp Brasil we are adapted to the production needs of our customers, as well as prepared to take the necessary flexibility measures.

In this case, and in order to adapt to the current market situation, it was necessary to adjust the factory's staff. Just as we are in constant communication with our customers, we are also in constant communication with the unions. This relationship helps us maintain the requested production levels with the minimum impact on the workforce”, says the note.

In 2020 the company adopted a temporary suspension of contracts and a reduction in the salaries of 1.200 employees. At the time, Gestamp claimed to have been impacted by the shutdown of production during Covid-19 restrictions. Even after the measures adopted, the company decided to end a shift at the company, resulting in 164 layoffs.
