New Federal Government Project, Focused on Low-Income People, Proposes Aid for Purchase of Cooking Gas That May Vary for Each Region of Brazil.

The Federal Government is working on creating a project that will provide cash assistance to enable the population to purchase cooking gas. The project proposes that low-income people could receive assistance at least every two months.

Senator Highlights Benefits of New Cooking Gas Aid

According to Senator Paulo Paim (PT-RS), author of the proposal, people need this assistance, considering the current economic crisis and the recent increase in cooking gas prices. The senator also states that the idea is for the project to help families use the Federal Government’s Emergency Aid solely for purchasing food and basic products, while this new assistance is only for cooking gas.

The amount of assistance from the Federal Government may vary for each region, given that the price of cooking gas is not the same across different states, which would be a significant obstacle, as it would be necessary to change the aid amount whenever cooking gas prices change.

According to Paim, the idea is to pay only an amount based on the price definitions from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biodegradables (ANP). The ANP sets gas prices monthly, so through this, the senator aims to find the definition for the new Federal Government assistance amount.

Who Will Be Eligible for the New Federal Government Aid?

The senator’s project focuses on the most humble people, so the cooking gas aid would be aimed at those in low-income situations. To qualify, individuals must be registered in the Single Registry.

This is the same list that determines who qualifies for the Bolsa Família program, which is why experts always emphasize the importance of being included in Cadúnico. A large part of the Federal Government’s projects use this list as a basis for determining who can or cannot receive any type of benefit or aid.

According to Paim, individuals who qualify must have a per capita income below half the minimum wage, based on the Federal Government’s current figure of R$ 550.

Forecast for the Cooking Gas Aid

There is still no forecast for the arrival of the project. Officially, the text is under discussion in the Senate, but a date for when lawmakers will start discussing it has not yet been set.

Finally, the Federal Government has not commented on the matter; however, there is a strong chance that this idea will not be approved, considering that the Planalto is currently avoiding new expenses as much as possible. And, according to the senator himself, the aids would generate more public spending.
