Incentivized Dismissal Process Covers Several Sectors And May Generate Impact Of R$ 386 Million Until June 2025

The São Paulo Metropolitan Trains Company (CPTM) has initiated a mass dismissal process that will affect up to 4,241 employees across its five operational lines. The plan, called Incentivized Dismissal Program (PDI), began on Tuesday (15) and will extend until June 2025, with a projected total cost of up to R$ 386 million. All sectors of the company will be affected, from security agents to train drivers and maintenance technicians, according to diariodostrilhos.

The Impact Of Dismissals On The Railway Sector

According to a document from CPTM itself, the dismissal process will occur in four phases, covering the entire period from November 2024 to June 2025. This move is part of a strategy from the Government of São Paulo for the privatization of the company, which is expected to be completed by 2026. Lines such as 11, 12, and 13 are slated for auction as early as 2025.

The layoffs involve long-term employees, many of whom have dedicated decades to railway transportation since the foundation of CPTM in 1992. Although the PDI offers a financial bonus, the emotional and professional impact on the lives of these workers is a concern that the plan does not address. After all, it is not just the wallet that feels the change.

An Uncertain Scenario For The Future Of CPTM

With the imminence of privatization and concession of lines, workers face a scenario of uncertainties. The 7-Rubi line, for example, has already been conceded and will be taken over by Tic Trens in January 2025. After the completion of this dismissal process, CPTM, which had 5,567 employees in 2023, will see its staff limited to just over 1,300 workers. And these numbers may shrink even further with the privatization of the 10-Turquesa line on the horizon.

Furthermore, the company will have to deal with the operational and administrative challenges arising from the drastic reduction in staff. How will this affect the operation of the trains that so many São Paulo residents use every day?

The Financial And Emotional Burden Of Dismissals

The PDI brings financial advantages for those who opt for voluntary dismissal, increasing the severance pay based on years of service and base salary. However, many workers, especially those with over 20 years of service, may have difficulties finding new employment.

This is one of the largest mass layoffs faced by the company, and the estimated total cost of R$ 386 million also includes employees from the 7-Rubi line.

However, beyond the numbers and bonuses, there is a strategic concern about the mental and emotional effects on those who have dedicated a significant part of their careers to improving public transportation in São Paulo.

For more information and details about the PDI and its conditions, visit the official CPTM website or contact the workers’ union in the sector.
