Federal Revenue Indicates That 32.6% of Cases Are Related to Medical Expenses, Followed by Omission of Income; 1.3 Million Declarations Still Awaiting Regularization

The Federal Revenue reported that nearly 4 million Brazilians fell into the fine mesh of Income Tax in 2025, equivalent to 8.7% of the total declarations submitted this year. Although two-thirds have already been released after corrections, about 1.3 million taxpayers remain entangled in tax issues.

The main reason, according to the agency, lies in medical deductions, which surpassed omissions of income and led the errors. Many Brazilians, however, still do not fully understand why their declarations were withheld, which increases the insecurity regarding the process.

The Main Reasons for the Fine Mesh in 2025

According to the Federal Revenue, medical expenses account for 32.6% of the withholdings, while omissions of income, either incorrectly declared or not reported by dependents, total 30.8%.

Next are errors in other deductions, such as education and private pension (16%), and discrepancies in Withholding Tax (15.1%).

This trend repeats a recent pattern: in 2024, medical deductions had already surpassed omitted income.

The Revenue emphasizes that, in addition to typographical errors, it is common for taxpayers to not be able to prove all the expenses reported, which creates inconsistencies.

The Situation in São Paulo

Only in the capital of São Paulo, 410,000 declarations ended up in the fine mesh, which represents 9.3% of the total submitted.

Of these, 67% have already been released after correction. However, more than 135,000 are still awaiting review.

One striking fact: nearly 69% of the withheld declarations belong to taxpayers who were due a refund.

This means that many only discovered the problem when they noticed that the payment had not been credited.

How to Know If You Fell Into the Fine Mesh

The taxpayer can check their status on the e-CAC (Virtual Service Center of the Federal Revenue), available with a Gov.br silver or gold login.

In the declaration extract, it is possible to identify pendencies, see if the refund has been released, or even check any debts automatically compensated.

The most common situations that appear are: declaration in processing, with pendencies, under review, or in the refund queue.

In more complex cases, the Revenue may issue a summons for document presentation or forward the process for manual handling.

How to Regularize the Declaration

Those who fell into the fine mesh must submit a rectifying declaration, correcting the identified errors.

The procedure can be done through the Income Tax program or through the My Income Tax application. After submission, a new receipt number is generated, and the process is re-evaluated.

Additionally, the tax authorities will send letters to taxpayers who have not yet taken action, with instructions on how to regularize.

The goal is to expedite the release of refunds and reduce the number of withheld declarations.

The fine mesh continues to be one of the biggest headaches for taxpayers and, in 2025, affected millions of Brazilians.

The most common errors reinforce the importance of heightened attention when filling out the declaration and keeping receipts for all reported expenses.

And you, have you fallen into the fine mesh of Income Tax in 2025 or in previous years? Do you believe that the Federal Revenue acts transparently, or is the process still confusing for citizens? Share your experience in the comments — your opinion can help other taxpayers.
