The PROFARTES, a free master’s offered by MEC, stands out as a program designed to strengthen the role of arts teachers in public schools.
Exclusively targeted at practicing teachers, the master’s program promotes a practical and theoretical approach that promises to elevate arts education in Brazil.
The program is a response to the growing demand for better qualified educators, capable of exploring artistic languages in the classroom with in-depth knowledge and updated pedagogical techniques.
Structure and Objectives of PROFARTES
With a duration of 24 months and a total workload of 420 hours, PROFARTES combines in-person classes with distance activities.
There are 360 hours of in-person classes and 60 hours of online activities, allowing teachers to adjust the schedule to their work routines.
This flexibility helps educators dedicate themselves to the course without compromising their classroom time.
MEC structured the course with the goal of enabling teachers to develop an in-depth understanding of various artistic languages and enhance their teaching practices.
Among the expected competencies are the critique and analysis of various artistic languages, such as visual arts, theater, dance, and music.
This training is specifically designed to transform arts education into a richer and more meaningful process for students in the public network.
According to MEC, the program aims not only to train teachers but also to encourage them to become leaders in the transformation of arts education in Brazil, allowing them to expand their skills, experiences, and pedagogical innovation capacity.
With an approach that integrates theory and practice, PROFARTES values the importance of arts in the holistic development of students, considering their expression skills, creativity, and critical sense.
Who Can Enroll? See the Criteria
To participate in PROFARTES, the candidate must be a practicing arts teacher in basic education and have a degree recognized by MEC.
These requirements are essential to ensure that the teachers enrolled are aligned with the program’s objectives and can bring a critical and practical view of art as a pedagogical tool into the classroom.
Proof of practice in the arts is also mandatory, being an essential requirement for enrollment.
This measure ensures that professionals seeking the master’s degree genuinely have experience and interest in developing quality artistic education in schools.
Distribution of Spots and Participating Institutions
For the first semester of 2025, PROFARTES offers 296 spots distributed among higher education institutions (IES) in different regions of the country. Among the participating universities are:
- State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC) – 12 spots
- São Paulo State University (UNESP) – 22 spots
- Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) – 20 spots
- University of Brasília (UnB) – 32 spots
- Federal University of Ceará (UFC) – 14 spots
- Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) – 19 spots
- Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) – 20 spots
These and other institutions, including universities from the North and Northeast regions, such as the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) and the Regional University of Cariri (URCA), expand the program’s offering, promoting access to teachers from diverse regions and socioeconomic contexts.
According to MEC, the distribution of spots follows a model that considers the specificities of each locality, with quota policies to facilitate access for underrepresented groups.
This model aims to include even more teachers working in less favored areas.
Selection Process: Two Phases of Evaluation
The selection process for PROFARTES consists of two rigorous phases.
In the first stage, the candidate must present a Descriptive Memorial and a Research Project, which will be evaluated by a panel of experts.
The projects must be consistent with the course profile, addressing themes that can be applied in educational practice.
In the second phase, there is the Oral Defense Exam, where the candidate defends their project orally.
This moment allows the panel to assess the candidate’s understanding of the chosen topic, their clarity, and alignment with the objectives of PROFARTES.
According to MEC, the selection aims to ensure that the chosen teachers have a profile aligned with the focus of the course and a strong commitment to arts education.
How and Where to Apply: Deadline Tomorrow
