Free Course at UFRGS Addresses Pedagogical Mediation in Distance Education, Explains Differences Brought by the New Decree of Distance Education and Offers Digital Certificate for Those Who Complete All Activities.

Enrollment is open for the free and 100% online course “Tutoring for Distance Education: Pedagogical Mediation in Focus – Edition 2025/2,” offered by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).

The training is aimed at those who wish to work in distance education, especially in roles of pedagogical mediation carried out remotely, with the possibility of working from home, and guarantees free digital certificate to participants who complete all activities successfully.

The launch of the new edition occurs at a time of updating the rules of distance education in Brazil.

The Decree No. 12.456/2025 redefined the organization of distance education and differentiated the roles of tutors, with a more administrative focus, and pedagogical mediators, who are directly responsible for mediating the learning process.

Pedagogical Mediation and Changes in Distance Education

UFRGS offers the course through its open course platform, the Lumina environment, maintaining the proposal for introductory training for those who want to work in distance courses at different levels of education.

The 2025/2 edition remains 100% online, with no tuition or enrollment fee, and certification issued by the university at the end.

Although the material was prepared before the publication of the new decree, the institution explains that the term “tutor” is used in the sense prior to the regulation, associated with the pedagogical role of supporting students, clarifying doubts, and promoting didactic mediation.

In the recent regulation, these tasks are closer to the figure of the pedagogical mediator, while “tutor” now designates predominantly administrative activities.

In practice, the course prepares participants to operate in both structures that still use the old nomenclature and in institutions that have already adopted the new term.

What Changed Between Tutor and Pedagogical Mediator

With the enactment of Decree No. 12.456/2025, the federal government established an updated regulatory framework for distance education.

The pedagogical mediator is now described as the professional who guides the student, clarifies doubts, encourages participation, and monitors performance.

The tutor, on the other hand, tends to take on administrative tasks, such as supporting academic records and organizing information.

As UFRGS’s course was created before the change, the content mainly addresses practices that today fall under pedagogical mediation.

Contents of the Eight Modules of the Course

Throughout eight modules, the course presents the fundamentals and routines of tutoring in distance education.

The first module discusses tutoring responsibilities, necessary skills, and the main regulations governing distance education.

In the next step, the content addresses organization and planning of actions, guiding on monitoring routines, time management, and use of digital tools.

Another module deals with introduction of the subject and first contact with students, focusing on clarity and building a well-structured pedagogical environment.

The part dedicated to interaction and mediation discusses strategies to encourage participation, monitor collaborative activities, and strengthen pedagogical presence in virtual environments.

The following modules delve into topics related to evaluation, intervention, and feedback, addressing the identification of difficulties and the preparation of constructive pedagogical responses.

There is also a specific module on evaluation challenges in distance education, discussing issues such as low participation, plagiarism, and difficulties in interpreting statements.

In the final part, the course addresses systematic monitoring and report preparation, followed by a general synthesis that includes self-evaluation of practice by the participant.

Target Audience and Remote Work

The training is open to anyone interested in working in distance education, with no prior experience required.

The content is especially relevant for teachers, pedagogues, education students, and professionals in related fields who wish to enter or consolidate their roles in pedagogical mediation.

With the expansion of distance education, the demand for professionals who work remotely in roles of mediation, student support, pedagogical assistance, and report preparation has increased.

By obtaining a certificate issued by a federal university, participants enhance their chances of applying for positions as pedagogical mediators, tutors in online courses, monitors of virtual subjects, and other roles related to remote educational support.

How to Enroll in the Free Course at UFRGS

Enrollment is done exclusively online, at the UFRGS portal and the Lumina platform.

The process consists of filling out a simple registration form and waiting for confirmation by email, which grants immediate access to the virtual environment.

The classes are self-directed, allowing participants to organize their own study pace.

The digital certificate is issued free of charge after completing all required modules and activities.
