Starting on October 21, basic education teachers will be able to register for this unique opportunity.
The course, which will be officially launched in November, will begin its classes in March 2025.
With an initial offering of 250,000 spots, the expectation is that the number will grow rapidly, reaching the promised total.
Training Teachers for Inclusive Education
According to the 2023 School Census, Brazil has about 1.5 million special education students enrolled in regular classes in public basic education.
These numbers reveal the urgency of preparing educators to deal with diversity in classrooms.
In this context, the MEC, through Secadi and Capes, created this training course, which aims to improve the pedagogical support for these students, promoting a more inclusive school.
Universities and the Partnership for the Project
Fifty higher education institutions have already joined the program. The universities will be responsible for the registration process of participants, facilitating the filling of spots.
The training will be offered by the Open University of Brazil (UAB), in partnership with the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) and the Federal University of Goiás (UFG).
The total duration of the course will be 120 hours and will be conducted entirely online, using the Virtual Learning Environment (AVA) from Capes.
Course Structure: What Will Be Covered?
The training will be divided into four modules that cover essential topics for inclusive education:
- Human Rights, Diversity, and Inclusive Education;
- Human Development, Teaching, and Learning in the Context of Inclusive Education;
- Curriculum, Technologies, and Inclusive Pedagogical Practices;
- Inclusive Practices, Resources, and Pedagogical Materials in School.
Each module will offer a combination of reading educational materials, interactive activities with tutor mediation, and practical case discussions, along with experience reports.
Assessments will be made through written texts and projects, reinforcing participants’ theoretical and practical learning.
Methodology and Objectives of the Course
According to the MEC, the central objective of this training is to empower teachers to develop pedagogical practices aligned with the principles of inclusive education.
The course will also discuss the political and legal aspects involving special education, addressing topics such as accessibility, intersectionality, and human rights.
Moreover, the content will be updated with the latest research and scientific studies on the inclusion of students with disabilities in regular schools, ensuring a practical and well-founded approach.
At the end, it is expected that educators will be prepared to face the challenges of inclusive classrooms and contribute to building a more welcoming and equitable school environment.
Reflection on Inclusive Pedagogical Practice in MEC
Throughout the course, participants will be encouraged to reflect on their pedagogical practices and develop new strategies focusing on the uniqueness of special education students.
The idea is for educators to become multipliers of a culture of inclusion and respect in schools, assisting in the development of resources and accessible pedagogical materials for all students.
The modules will be based on the legal frameworks of special education, ensuring that the content provided is in compliance with the guidelines of the National Education Plan and other official documents.
With this solid foundation, teachers will be able to apply in the classroom everything they learn during the course.
Expected Impact of the Inclusive Education Course
With the initiative, the MEC hopes to create a profound impact on the quality of basic education in Brazil, especially regarding the inclusion of students with disabilities.
Investing in teacher training is one of the main strategies to ensure that inclusive education becomes a reality in public schools.
And what do you think of this new initiative from MEC? Will these online courses actually transform special education in Brazil?
