The Visit of Queen Elizabeth to the Edifício Itália in 1968 Yielded One of the Most Striking Scenes in Paulista History, When the Monarch Arrived at the Terrace and Was Surprised by the View That Revealed the Growing Dimension of the Capital
Walking through the central region of São Paulo means observing some of the city’s most emblematic buildings. Among them is the Edifício Itália, one of the landmarks of Italian immigration and considered the fourth tallest skyscraper in the capital.
Since 1965, its silhouette has altered the Paulista skyline and has even welcomed members of the British royalty. Now, the building celebrates six decades with an expanded program and new attractions.
The Historical Importance of the Edifício Itália
In the middle of the twentieth century, the advance of industries and population growth spurred large works in the Center. It was in this scenario that the Italian community decided to build a building that represented their social achievement and housed the headquarters of the Circolo Italiano.

It seems to have come out of a science fiction movie: A Brazilian city where it rains almost every day, recording over 4,000 mm per year, driven by climatic factors — a direct result of its strategic location in the Amazon.

The water crisis that could change everything this year has already begun; it’s not just about the climate, it affects technology, raises product prices, and can halt entire companies without warning.
The inauguration in 1965 marked the period and presented the city with a construction of 45 floors and 165 meters in height.
At the time, the Edifício Itália was the second tallest skyscraper in São Paulo. Its grandeur attracted national and international attention. Three years later, in 1968, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip visited São Paulo and, accompanied by then-mayor Faria Lima, went up to the terrace. The monarch was impressed by the panoramic view that reveals the vastness of the capital.
New Attractions Mark the Current Phase
Over the decades, the building has maintained activities linked to the Italian association and traditional ventures. Over time, however, the location began to gather leisure options that expand its cultural relevance.
In addition to Terraço Itália, the restaurant at the top of the building, there are art exhibitions, bars, and nightclubs operating in different spaces.
Among the attractions, the Festa Galoppo stands out for bringing together the 30+ crowd on electronic music nights with well-known DJs. LAB MR promotes debates and exhibitions on art and architecture. Another highlight is the speakeasy bar The S, discreetly installed and dedicated to jazz performances, as well as drinks and snacks.
Renovation Prepares the Building for the Future
For this new phase, the Edifício Itália will undergo a renovation planned to intensify its architectural grandeur.
The investment planned is R$ 2 million and the work may extend for up to two years. Nevertheless, the existing services will continue to operate normally.
With a diverse program and a remarkable history, the Edifício Itália remains one of the most significant spaces in São Paulo, especially now that it enters its prime.
