Raízen, Licensee of the Shell Brand, Opened This Week an Electric Vehicle Charging Station in São Paulo That Uses Sustainable Energy. The Goal Is to Install 35 Charging Stations by 2023.
Raízen, a company licensed by the Shell brand, inaugurated on Monday (13) the first Shell Recharge electric charging station in São Paulo, in the North Zone of the city. The station has 50 kW and 150 kW chargers, and Shell Recharge can recharge electric vehicles in up to 35 minutes, using energy from a sustainable and clean source. Additionally, the Shell licensee also plans to have a network with 35 charging stations of this type by the end of the crop year, which ends in March 2023.
Raízen’s Electric Vehicle Charging Station Uses Solar Energy
Currently, the Shell licensee provides renewable energy to over 500 Shell stations through distributed generation and projects a reduction of up to 20% in energy costs, saving approximately R$ 3 million per year for distributors.
The energy generation is done using photovoltaic solar panels or by utilizing byproducts from sugarcane, among other sources.

Shell, Raízen, and Volkswagen Sign Partnership
The charging stations for electric vehicles in São Paulo are part of a partnership between Raízen, Shell, and Volkswagen do Brasil to promote electrification in the country. The companies also aim to encourage the use of ethanol as a complementary strategy among electric, flex, and hybrid vehicles.
The partnership includes initiatives for installing charging stations for the electric vehicles of the brand and supplying sustainable energy for Volkswagen’s industries and dealership network in the country. In terms of ethanol, Shell’s goal is to develop new formulas for ethanol through its licensee, along with R&D to improve the efficiency of the biofuel.
The German automaker also recently announced a Research and Development Center for Biofuels in the country. The objective is to research the frontiers of ethanol use as a means of electrification via fuel cells, with a focus on export as well.
Raízen Invests in Tupinambá Energia
In January, Raízen announced its participation in a R$ 10 million investment round in the startup Tupinambá Energia, a company responsible for electric vehicle charging solutions. The startup was developed in 2019 and operates end-to-end electric refueling infrastructures, from the app to the charged car. The round also received investments from Plataforma Capital.
The Tupinambá app features over a thousand charging points mapped across Brazil to facilitate the location for users of electric vehicles of establishments that provide this category of service.
At the time, Raízen stated that the investment would boost the development of the charging network in the country, as well as provide other market solutions. There is also the possibility of converting the investment into equity participation in the company.
The partnership aims to integrate Raízen’s portfolio in electromobility, which includes the distribution of clean energy and electric refueling solutions for corporate fleets, as well as the installation of an extensive network of fast charging stations through the Shell Recharge program, announced at the end of 2021.
