Recife Had the First Synagogue in the Americas, founded in 1636, nearly half a century before New York appeared on the map. In the heart of Old Recife, Sephardic Jews fleeing the Iberian Inquisition found, under Dutch rule, the religious freedom necessary to create Kahal Zur Israel, a landmark in world Jewish history.
The temple, built on the old Street of the Jews, thrived for less than two decades until it was closed in 1654, when the Portuguese regained control and reinstated religious persecution. Centuries later, the site was rediscovered and restored, becoming a center of memory that connects Brazil, the Netherlands, and the United States through the path of its faithful.

With the Dutch conquest of Pernambuco in 1630, this freedom reached Brazil. In Recife, Sephardim from Amsterdam established a thriving community and, six years later, founded the first synagogue in the Americas.

With the Pernambuco Insurrection and the Portuguese reclaiming the territory, the Jewish community was once again persecuted. In 1654, Jews were forced to leave Brazil.
Some returned to the Netherlands, but a group of 23 refugees embarked on a journey that would change the history of the Americas.
After passing through Curaçao and facing pirates along the way, the group reached New Amsterdam, now New York, where they founded the first organized Jewish community in North America.
Thus, Kahal Zur Israel, even though extinct, directly influenced the birth of Judaism on North American soil.
From Oblivion to Excavations and Restoration
Over the centuries, the original synagogue building was demolished and the site lost its historical identity.
Only in the late 1990s, during excavations on Bom Jesus Street, archaeologists discovered the foundations of the building and the mikvé, the Jewish ritual bath, confirming that the 17th-century congregation functioned there.
The finding led to the restoration of the space and the creation of the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue Museum, inaugurated in 2001.
The site preserves architectural fragments, replicas of documents and religious objects, and recounts the trajectory of Jews in Dutch Brazil. Today, the space is also a Jewish cultural center that welcomes visitors from around the world.
The Symbolic and Cultural Importance of Kahal Zur Israel
More than an archaeological site, Kahal Zur Israel represents the beginning of religious coexistence on the American continent.
The synagogue symbolizes the first chapter of Jewish presence in the Americas and the direct influence of Recife in the formation of Jewish communities in the northern hemisphere.
