The United Kingdom Plans New Operation with an Aircraft Carrier Group Led by HMS Prince of Wales on Global Mission.

The UK Ministry of Defence has confirmed the upcoming and ambitious deployment of its naval force, led by the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales. The mission, named Operation Highmast, marks one of the largest British military commitments in recent years and reinforces the country’s strategic position on the global stage.

Operation Highmast: HMS Prince of Wales, Submarine, Frigates and Fighters

Scheduled to begin on April 22, 2025, Operation Highmast will start with the departure of HMS Prince of Wales from the port of Portsmouth.

The fleet will gather off the coast of Cornwall before heading towards the Mediterranean, where joint exercises focused on European security will be conducted.

During the eight-month mission, the strike group will cross the Indian Ocean and the Indo-Pacific, visiting around 30 countries and promoting military cooperation with allies such as the United States, India, Singapore, and Malaysia.

British Strength and Technology at Sea

The Carrier Strike Group will consist of HMS Prince of Wales, Type 23 frigates, two Type 45 destroyers, an Astute-class attack submarine, and about 40 aircraft, including up to 24 F-35B Lightning II fighters. Merlin and Wildcat helicopters will also be onboard, essential for air support and naval operations.

In total, 4,000 British military personnel will be involved, along with contributions from 12 other nations.

Norway has already confirmed the dispatch of a frigate to support the mission, while Canada and Spain are among the countries that will also join the operation.

In addition to military engagement, Operation Highmast will have a strategic focus on commercial events held in Singapore, Japan, and India.

The aim is to leverage the international presence to promote British industry, open new markets, and strengthen diplomatic ties.

Commitment to Global Stability

According to Defence Secretary John Healey, “this is a unique opportunity for the United Kingdom to operate in close coordination with our partners and allies in a deployment that not only demonstrates our commitment to security and stability but also provides an opportunity to boost our own economy and promote British trade and exports.”.

The operation underscores the UK’s ongoing commitment to global security while reaffirming its presence in strategic regions. The deployment of HMS Prince of Wales represents more than military might: it is also an effort in modern naval diplomacy.
