Flora Energy Expands to Rio de Janeiro and Generates Even Greater Savings Due to the Water Crisis and Adoption of Thermoelectric Plants; Consumption in Hot Seasons Will Be More Expensive Than in Winter
The renewable energy startup Flora Energy lands in Rio de Janeiro to provide clean and sustainable energy supply and reduce electricity bills. While in São Paulo the Energytech achieves up to 10% savings, in the state of Rio de Janeiro the discount is even greater, up to 17%. With the water crisis and consequent increase in the tariff flag by utility companies, the deduction can reach 26.5% in the capital city.

User Does Not Need to Make Investments in Panel Installations or Other Works; Just Join the Digital Platform and Is Eligible for Bill Discounts
“In Rio, the cost of energy (kWh) to the customer is higher, due to factors such as greater loss in the distribution process. Additionally, there is the exemption of ICMS on Energy Credits from Distributed Generation, which reduces the amount to be paid to the distributor, allowing Flora to deliver even more savings in the region,” points out Roberto Cavalieri, one of the company’s founders. The user does not need to make investments in panel installations or other works; just join the digital platform and is eligible for bill discounts.
Founded in 2020 and present in more than 300 municipalities, Flora has reached 100% capacity in São Paulo’s interior. The startup operates through the Distributed Generation system, where sustainable farms produce and inject renewable energy into the local utility’s electrical network, receiving energy credits that are then passed on to their customers in the form of bill discounts.

The distributor remains responsible for the energy supply – thus, there are no additional risks of power outages – and sends the bill with the reduced amount. Flora issues a separate invoice for the consumption during the month – which is directly deducted from the utility’s bill. The sum of the two invoices is always lower than the traditional model.
The benefits for the consumer align with the reduction of environmental impact: Flora already avoids the emission of over 215 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere annually, consuming clean energy, which is equivalent to planting over 10,000 trees. “We created an exclusive operational, commercial, and technological solution that enables us to efficiently serve residential customers. In addition to a greater supply of renewable energy in the market, we provide consumers the freedom to choose – who were previously trapped by the monopoly of their region’s utility company,” says Cavalieri.
Electricity Bills Remain High in Hot Seasons and Are Expected to Rise
The collective imagination is that more electricity is consumed in winter, but the forecast is that electricity bills will remain high even in the hotter seasons. “The consumption profile changes, but it doesn’t necessarily mean spending less. While winter has higher expenses with hot showers, heaters, and lights that are turned on earlier due to earlier nightfall, in summer, consumption often increases mainly due to more use of air conditioning, refrigerators, and fans,” lists the co-founder of Flora Energy.
With the water crisis, the bill is expected to be even higher. Due to the depletion of reservoirs in hydroelectric plants, the government has taken emergency measures to ensure energy supply and prevent blackouts, such as activating more thermoelectric plants, which have higher costs.
The Aneel (National Electric Energy Agency) approved the auction for contracting reserve energy from May 2022 to December 2025, a period whose costs are expected to be passed on to consumers. “With Flora, the customer ensures predictability in their spending, maintaining the same tariff level always, with protection against all tariff variations,” says Cavalieri, who recommends conscious consumption.
