After Years In The Brazilian Automotive Market, The Volkswagen Kombi Remains A Great Option For Cargo Transport. The VW Kombi, A Cheap Car From The German Brand, Can Be Found In The Range Of R$ 45 Thousand.
Almost 11 years ago, Volkswagen ceased the production of the VW Kombi in Brazil. The veteran is one of the longest-lasting models in our automotive industry and also one of the favorites for those who need a reliable and relatively cheap work vehicle. So much so that when a Volkswagen Kombi appears in the inventory of any specialized commercial vehicle store, it usually doesn’t stay long until it is sold.
How Much Does The Cheap And Classic VW Car Cost?
According to Francisco Cassettari, a salesperson at ABC Utilitários, a specialized store in São Bernardo do Campo (SP), when a Volkswagen Kombi appears, it stays for a maximum of 10 days until it is sold. The same statement comes from other merchants, according to information from Autoesporte.
They claim that despite there being no zero-km Kombi for over a decade, no other cheap car has managed to take the place of the old VW Kombi as an entry-level commercial vehicle. According to Olien Mafra from the Senador Veículos store in Curitiba, the Expert and Jumpy have taken some of the clientele. However, it cannot be said that they have replaced the Kombi, as they have diesel engines and are much more expensive.

Currently, a Volkswagen Kombi Van 2013 Can Be Found In The Range Of R$ 45 Thousand. The price decreases according to the age of the units. According to Cassettari, the cheap car from VW hasn’t been selling well lately because it wasn’t competitive. There were better diesel options, such as the Kia Bongo and Hyundai HR.
As these vehicles have become more expensive in the last three years, the Kombi has seen an increase in demand again. For comparison, the aforementioned pair of Korean vans rarely sell for less than R$ 60 Thousand, considering units that are around 15 years old.
Difficulty Finding A Volkswagen Kombi
The current problem is that the stock of Kombis in stores is getting smaller and smaller. At Senador Veículos, for example, one to two units appear per month. The availability of good Kombis is low. As the years go by, they become increasingly rare. Since 2019, it has been possible to observe a huge scarcity, Mafra states.
According to the National Department of Transit (Denatran), there are currently about 980,000 units of the Kombi registered in the country, in all versions, engine types, and models. The number is quite significant, especially considering that it is a cheap car that stopped being produced almost 10 years ago. However, it is necessary to consider that a considerable portion is far from being in ideal condition.
Care When Buying The Classic VW Kombi
When acquiring a commercial vehicle, attention to the condition of the vehicle should be even greater. For Enilson Sales from Fenauto, three points require more care. He states that the first thing to notice about the Volkswagen Kombi is the engine.
A poor engine is a huge depreciation factor, and any repair can cost a lot of money. The second factor is the suspension. A light commercial vehicle is made to carry weight, but many people end up carrying more than the car can handle. The brakes also need to be checked, regardless of the usage. Discs, pads, calipers, and fluids must be inspected and, if necessary, replaced.
Jeferson Santana Araújo owns a company for trailers and transportation and drives a 1987 pickup version Kombi around the streets of São Paulo. The city is, in fact, home to the largest fleet of Kombis in the country, with just under 150,000 registrations. And even though some are on sale for exorbitant amounts, exceeding R$ 150 Thousand, most are like Araújo’s, a work instrument at a low price – R$ 12 Thousand, in the case of the businessman.

Por seu preço baixo, a VW Kombi também segue sendo o principal veículo utilitário de entrada para motorhome e campistas.
