With Emeralds On All Faces, The Rare Piece Was Nicknamed “Little Remarkable” And Attracts International Attention.

A natural rock matrix covered in emeralds will be auctioned on August 8, with an opening bid of R$ 100 million. Nicknamed “Little Remarkable,” the piece is 68 centimeters tall, weighs 92.5 kilograms, and was found in Bahia in 2004.

Experts highlight the geological and historical value of the matrix, which features emeralds on all its sides — something considered extremely rare. The natural structure of the piece, according to geologist César Maia, makes it a true sculpture of the Earth with around 2.4 billion years of formation.

Emerald Rock Valued At R$ 100 Million Will Be Auctioned In Brazil

The highlight in the Brazilian precious stone market this time is the emeralds, more specifically a matrix nicknamed “Little Remarkable.” The name was given by an anonymous collector in reference to actress Carmen Miranda. The rock will be offered at auction by Bid Leilões with a minimum price of R$ 100 million.

Although it is not the largest matrix ever recorded — at 68 cm and 92.5 kg — what impresses is the quantity and uniform distribution of the emeralds throughout the rock. “It doesn’t have just one side. The emeralds are present on all faces,” explained César Maia, the expert responsible for the evaluation. This factor significantly enhances its value as a unique piece for private collections or museum holdings.

Why Do Emeralds In Matrix Value So Much?

According to the Brazilian Institute of Gems and Precious Metals (IBGM), the value of a cut emerald can reach R$ 8,000 per carat, or R$ 16,000 per gram. However, in the case of a matrix like the Little Remarkable, its value lies in its geological integrity and aesthetic rarity, not just in the weight or purity of the gems.

Unlike cut stones, natural pieces like this serve as symbols of geological time and raw beauty. They are sought after by museums, investors, and high-end collectors, not only for their mineral rarity but for their symbolic value.

Other Million-Dollar Auctions of Brazilian Emeralds

The market for Brazilian emeralds has been growing. In May 2024, a 137 kg stone also extracted in Bahia was auctioned for R$ 175 million after being seized by the Federal Revenue. An emerald weighing 380 kg removed in 2001 was repatriated from the United States and is now in the custody of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro.

Bahia, especially the Pindobaçu region, is a global reference for emerald production. According to data from the National Mining Agency (ANM), the state concentrates the largest deposits in the country, with growing export potential.

Would you pay R$ 100 million for a rough rock with emeralds? Do you think it should go to a museum or remain in a private collection? Share your opinion.

Um museu é o local ideal. Deixar a pedra para estudos de futuras gerações
