The first full-service contract, inspired by the model commonly adopted in the United States and Europe, in the Brazilian railway sector was signed this week between the companies Rumo and the logistics transportation company Loram. This is another step taken by the railway company towards attracting new business in the sector and in search of quality services to ensure good maintenance of the Brazilian railway network.
Thus, the full-service contract has an initial validity of 15 years, during which Loram will provide its operation and maintenance services for a model 120 rail grinder that will serve the 2,183 kilometers of railway between Rondonópolis (MT) and the Port of Santos (SP).

The completion of the equipment delivery for the start of the company’s services in the railway sector is expected in 2023, and with that, Rumo hopes to reduce operational costs on the railway network that connects the states of Mato Grosso and São Paulo by more than 50%.
Furthermore, Rumo’s supply director, Felipe Bertoncello, commented on the full-service contract and highlighted that one of the main current problems of the national railway sector is the high maintenance costs of the networks.
Thus, the partnership with Loram will allow this responsibility to be in the hands of the service provider and, with that, the costs of operation and maintenance of the equipment to be significantly reduced. He also emphasized that the equipment becomes idle when there is no demand and that the contract will ensure that does not happen on the relevant network.
First Full-Service Contract In The Brazilian Railway Sector, Signed Between The Companies, Represents A Change In Service Provision In The Segment
The maintenance and operation of railway networks are highly complex services, and with the first full-service contract signed in the country, there may be a more modern perspective on possibilities in the segment.
Additionally, Rumo highlighted that the chosen equipment has nine cars (front control car, rear control car, power car, two water cars, and four grinding cars) and approximately 200 meters in length, to ensure more efficiency in service provision.
Murilo Martins, General Director of Loram Brazil, commented on the signed contract and highlighted the company’s goals in the partnership, stating that “Our business is, in essence, to increase the capacity and productivity of maintenance with the least possible impact on traffic, through innovation, digitization and high-performance equipment, delivering the final service that the railway needs to receive in a personalized way.”
Finally, Rumo hopes that, in addition to the North and Paulista networks, which comprise the section between Rondonópolis (MT) and the Port of Santos (SP), the full-service contract model can also, in the future, be contracted for the provision of services on the Central Network and future extensions.
