After Devastating Attack in Ukraine, Russia Raises Rhetoric and Warns of Possible Escalation Against NATO Members.

Russia intensified the conflict on Thursday, November 21, 2024, by conducting a strategic attack in Ukraine using the hypersonic missile Oreshnik, an experimental weapon with advanced capabilities. The target was the military installation in Dnipro, known for its historical significance in missile production during the Cold War. This action went far beyond a simple bombing, sending a direct message to Ukraine and its Western allies.

In response to recent actions by Kiev, which used long-range weapons supplied by Western countries to strike targets within Russian territory, President Vladimir Putin declared that “the conflict is now global!”. This threat was accompanied by alarming rhetoric against the United States and other NATO countries, reinforcing fears of an unprecedented escalation.

Russia’s Attack with Oreshnik: A Message to the West

The use of the Oreshnik, a hypersonic missile capable of reaching speeds exceeding Mach 10 (12,300 km/h), marks the first time such technology has been employed in combat. Besides being unprecedented, the attack reinforces Russia’s ability to overcome traditional missile defenses, as the Oreshnik can perform unpredictable maneuvers while crossing high altitudes.

The choice of Dnipro as a target was not incidental. The installation symbolizes Ukrainian military strength, and its destruction seeks to weaken the country’s infrastructure while sending a direct warning to the West. For experts, this action reflects Putin’s intention to prove the superiority of his arsenal while directly challenging Ukraine’s allies, such as the United States, United Kingdom, and France, key NATO members.

Putin and Rhetoric Against NATO

After the attack, Putin stated that Russia will retaliate against any country that provides weapons used against its targets. This threat not only directs attention to the United States but also to other NATO members that support Ukraine, such as the United Kingdom and Germany.

Analysts fear that if the threats materialize, Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which provides for mutual defense, could be invoked, leading to a direct conflict between the world’s major nuclear powers.

“The collapse of the INF treaty in 2019 and NATO’s military expansion were critical factors for the development of weapons like the Oreshnik,” justified Putin, reinforcing that Russia considers these actions direct threats to its sovereignty.

Global Impact and Strategic Instability

The attack with the Oreshnik symbolizes more than a technological advancement: it represents a milestone in the evolution of armed conflicts. The war in Ukraine is becoming a testing ground for next-generation technologies, with implications that could redefine the boundaries of global security.

Although experts believe that the use of nuclear weapons is still unlikely, the mere Russian rhetoric already generates global instability. Putin’s threat, asserting that “the conflict is now global!”, is a clear attempt to divide Western allies and test NATO’s resilience.

For Ukraine, the inability to intercept weapons like the Oreshnik exposes a concerning vulnerability, challenging the public’s confidence and the government’s ability to protect its critical infrastructure. Meanwhile, the West faces the dilemma of how to respond without escalating tensions with Russia further.

The Uncertainty of an Uncertain Future

As Russia raises its threats and expands the scope of its military strategy, the world is approaching a critical point. A direct confrontation between Russia and NATO members would be catastrophic, but the possibility, even if remote, can no longer be dismissed. In a scenario where the keywords are “division” and “escalation,” it is clear that global stability is under attack.

The conflict is now global, and the future is more uncertain than ever.
