CTG Brasil Creates Electrochemical Energy Storage Laboratory Integrated with Solar Power Plant at UHE Ilha Solteira, with 900 Photovoltaic Modules and Installed Capacity of 500 kWp.

CTG Brasil will build a laboratory focused on electrochemical energy storage, which will be integrated with a solar facility at UHE Ilha Solteira. The initiative will feature 900 photovoltaic modules, totaling an installed capacity of 500 kWp. This new structure aims to optimize the use of energy generated by solar panels and increase energy efficiency.

Additionally, CTG Brasil will collaborate with Senai Pernambuco, Thymos Energia, and Wisebyte on technical studies aimed at enhancing clean energy generation and reducing the use of fossil fuels. Integration with the solar power plant will allow for the assessment of new technologies and methodologies for the effective storage and distribution of electricity. This partnership is essential for advancing the search for more sustainable and innovative energy solutions.

CTG Brasil, one of the leaders in clean energy generation in the country, is developing a Research, Development and Innovation (R&D) project with the SENAI Institute of Innovation for Information and Communication Technologies (ISI-TICs), the innovation arm of SENAI Pernambuco, Thymos Energia, and Wisebyte. This project is part of a battery energy storage and distributed generation system, which will include the construction of a laboratory for electrochemical energy storage (batteries) connected to a small photovoltaic solar power plant with about 900 solar modules at the Ilha Solteira Hydroelectric Power Plant, located on the Paraná River, between the municipalities of Ilha Solteira and Selvíria.

Clean Energy Generation with New Technology

This CTG Brasil project represents an important advancement in promoting clean energy generation and reducing electricity costs, as it develops battery solutions to increase generation flexibility and improve system stability. Sergio Fonseca, Director of Business Development and R&D at CTG Brasil, states that ‘the project is innovative and contributes significantly to the development of a market for ancillary services in Brazil, complementary to traditional energy and capacity products. We will develop an important case that will be tested in practice and will provide us with inputs to contribute to the construction of a regulation for these resources‘, says Jovanio Santos, Director of New Business at Thymos Energia.

Advancements in Energy Storage

The technical studies, conducted in partnership with ISI-TICs/SENAI Pernambuco, Thymos Energia, and Wisebyte, will evaluate how battery systems, capable of having a significant impact, can collaborate with non-dispatchable sources, increasing generation flexibility, providing ancillary services, controlling grid fluctuations, among other services. Furthermore, the project will develop computational systems that will use artificial intelligence technologies to indicate the best cost-benefit ratio in deploying utilities such as large-scale batteries (Utility Scale Battery – USB) in hydroelectric, wind, or solar assets.

Implementation and Future Impact

The technological studies will also contribute to the development of regulations and procedures for the use of large-scale batteries in the Brazilian electrical system. The installed capacity of the photovoltaic plant will be 500 kWp, sufficient to generate energy equivalent to the consumption of over 380 households. Additionally, the energy storage capacity of the batteries is 100 kWh, designed according to the laboratory’s studies. Initially, the generated energy will be directed to CTG Brasil’s consumption, within the coverage area of the local distributor, but other forms of complementary use will be analyzed.

Robust Investments and Partnerships

Considerable investment will be made in this project: R$ 12.8 million (with R$ 10.3 million from CTG Brasil through the R&D program of ANEEL, resources from the Innovation Platform for the Industry from SENAI, and contributions from ISI-TICs/SENAI Pernambuco, Thymos Energia, and Wisebyte). Construction will begin in the second half of 2024 and completed in the first half of 2025, with supply of photovoltaic solar modules by JA Solar. This plant will also function as a mini-plant of the Arinos Solar Complex, from CTG Brasil, serving as a training laboratory for the company’s technical staff.

About CTG Brasil and Its Collaborations

With investments in 17 hydroelectric plants and 11 wind farms, CTG Brasil is one of the leading energy generators in the country, with 9 GW of installed and under construction capacity. The company, established in 2013, is one of the largest energy generators in Brazil, controlled by China Three Gorges Corporation, a global leader in clean energy generation.

Partnership with Wisebyte

Wisebyte, specialized in measurement systems, high-complexity software, and IoT hardware for industrial use and in Smart Cities, is one of the collaborators of this project. The company emerged following the acquisition of the Delta Energy Group and, in 2022, of BestDeal Technologies. It currently has offices in Uberlândia (MG) and São Paulo (SP).

Contributions of Thymos Energia

Thymos Energia is an energy consultancy and manager that offers solutions across all segments of the energy chain: generation, transmission, distribution, commercialization, and consumption. The company is focused on assisting with the design, planning, and construction of the future energy landscape, supporting decision-making for sector investors.
