With an investment of R$ 12 billion, the Intercity Train Project West Axis promises to not only revolutionize mobility between São Paulo and Sorocaba, but also bring innovations that include accessibility and integration with various transport modalities.

A new chapter in the state’s mobility has begun to be written with the advancement of the Intercity Train Project West Axis, which promises to connect the capital city to Sorocaba in just 60 minutes.

The latest announcement from the state government, made on April 30, involves the opening of a public consultation to discuss the aspects of the project, estimated at an impressive R$ 12 billion.

More than speed and time savings, the project surprises by including a series of unprecedented measures aimed at social well-being, such as breastfeeding areas, daycares, and actions to curb harassment on trains and at stations.

With a forecast to serve around 50,000 passengers per day, the train will play a strategic role in transforming urban mobility and integrating different regions of the state.

Public Consultation Is Open Until June

According to the Partnerships in Investments Secretariat (SPI), the public consultation on the Intercity Train West Axis will be open from April 30 to June 2, 2025.

The population will be able to send contributions and suggestions through an electronic form available on SPI’s official website.

Both individuals and legal entities are invited to participate, as long as they provide contact information (such as email or phone) and follow the model established by the government.

Proposals received outside the deadline or lacking mandatory information will be disregarded.

This type of participation has proven to be an effective strategy to make large public works more transparent and aligned with the real demands of society.

The openness to suggestions also allows for broader discussions on environmental, social, and operational issues involved in the project.

Project Aims for Efficiency and Regional Integration

The Intercity Train (TIC) West Axis will be about 100 kilometers long and is expected to operate with two types of service: express and local.

The express service will make the direct journey between São Paulo and Sorocaba in one hour, while the local service will also stop at intermediate cities along the way.

The time savings are one of the biggest attractions: according to the government, the train will be up to 50% faster than the bus journey and will reduce travel time by more than 40% compared to driving.

The billion-dollar investment includes the construction and modernization of stations, the purchase of new trains, the installation of modern safety systems, and the integration with existing modalities, such as CPTM, the Metro, and the future TIC North Axis.

This interconnection between systems could revolutionize the way people travel in the São Paulo metropolitan region.

A Train with a Social Purpose

If operational efficiency would already stand out by itself, the social aspect of the project is what draws the most attention.

The Intercity Train West Axis will be the first in the country to systematically incorporate adapted spaces for different audiences, promoting accessibility and inclusion.

Among the innovations are adapted restrooms for people with disabilities, breastfeeding rooms, support areas for daycares, and coordinated actions to combat harassment on trains and at stations.

These measures aim not only to provide comfort but also to ensure the safety and dignity of users, especially women and people with reduced mobility.

These elements, generally ignored in infrastructure projects in Brazil, demonstrate an evolution in the way public transport projects are conceived. It is a clear effort to offer a more human, modern, and safe mobility experience.

Potential to Boost Economic Development

In addition to the impact on mobility, the Intercity Train Project has the potential to boost the regional economy, facilitating access for workers, students, and tourists to the main cities of the São Paulo west axis.

Sorocaba, with over 700,000 inhabitants, is considered one of the most promising industrial and technological hubs in the state.

The fast connection to the capital could attract investments, create jobs, and stimulate urban decentralization – one of the significant challenges for metropolises like São Paulo.

With integration between different modalities and the possible creation of new commercial corridors, the train could contribute to real estate appreciation in the served regions, as well as stimulate the service sector.

Expectation for the Next Step

The public consultation is a strategic phase, but the São Paulo government will still need to overcome technical and bureaucratic steps before the start of the works.

The expectation is that the project concession notice will be published after the analysis of the submitted suggestions.

The public-private partnership (PPP) model is expected to be adopted to attract investors and ensure the project’s viability without directly burdening public coffers.

In similar projects, this type of partnership has shown good results, but it requires strict oversight to guarantee quality and compliance with deadlines.

The official timeline has not yet been released, but sources linked to the project state that the commercial operation of the TIC West Axis could begin by the end of the decade, provided the procedures advance as expected.

With a billion-dollar investment, a focus on efficiency, and innovative social solutions, the Intercity Train West Axis promises not only to shorten distances but also to transform the way public transport is conceived in Brazil.

And you, do you believe Brazil is ready for this new transport model? Which other routes should be prioritized in the coming years?
