The Initiative Aims to Revitalize the Least Populated Cities in the Region, Attracting Professionals Who Want to Live in Italy with Generous Subsidies
Imagine living under the radiant sun of Tuscany, surrounded by stunning landscapes and rich culture. This dream can come true thanks to a new initiative from this Italian region, which is offering significant financial incentives for those willing to live in Italy in rural mountain communities, according to Forbes.
“Residenzialità in Montagna 2024” Program
Tuscany has launched the “Residenzialità in Montagna 2024” program with the goal of attracting new residents to its least populated cities. The program offers subsidies ranging from €10,000 (around R$ 59,000) to €30,000 (approximately R$ 176,000) to help cover the costs of purchasing and renovating a home. With a total fund of €2.8 million (R$ 16.5 million), the region is determined to bring new life to its beautiful landscapes and historic communities.
Objective of the Program to Live in Italy
The main objective is to rejuvenate and stabilize the population of these areas, which have been suffering from significant aging over the years. This concept is not new in Italy, having already been implemented in other regions such as the island of Sardinia, the village of Presicce, Calabria, and Santo Stefano di Sessanio. Tuscany hopes to replicate the success of these initiatives by attracting younger people and new families to revitalize its small towns.

How to Participate and Live in Italy
To participate in the program and live in Italy, it is essential to follow some specific rules. The subsidies are designed to cover up to 50% of the costs associated with purchasing and renovating a home in towns with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. This means that the acquired property must be transformed into a permanent residence, excluding vacation homes.
Candidates must be Italian citizens, EU citizens, or non-EU citizens with a long-term residence permit. Additionally, it is necessary to commit to registering as a resident in an Italian city participating in the program.
There are 76 cities to choose from in Tuscany. Among them are:
- Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina, a medieval village in the hills of Maremma;
- San Casciano dei Bagni, known for its therapeutic hot springs;
- Caprese Michelangelo, the birthplace of the artist Michelangelo;
- Castel San Niccolo, in the province of Arezzo, near Florence;
- Capraia Isola, located in the heart of the Tuscan Archipelago.
Requirements for Non-EU Citizens Who Want to Live in Italy
For non-EU citizens, the process includes some additional steps. It is necessary to obtain a long-term residence permit, which usually requires demonstrating financial stability or a job offer in Italy. The permit must have a minimum duration of 10 years, aligning with the goal of promoting long-term residency and community integration. After obtaining the permit, candidates must register as residents in their new Italian locality to be eligible for the subsidy.
Deadlines and Registration
Interested parties should act quickly, as the registration deadline is tight. Applications close at 1 PM local time in Tuscany (8 AM in Brazil) on July 27. To apply, potential residents can visit the official website of the Tuscany region and fill out the necessary forms online.
