The IVA Technology Monitors and Verifies Dangerous Acts During Offshore Drilling Rig Operations, Thus Preventing Accidents in Projects. Constellation is Now Investing in the Safety of Its Employees and Plans to Expand the System in the Coming Years.

The offshore drilling segment is still a quite dangerous field to operate in, but companies have been increasingly investing in new safety systems for their projects. One such example is Constellation, which is using IVA technology (Intelligent Video Analytics) to reduce the number of accidents in its operations. The system is already being used in part of the company’s fleet, but it is still in a pilot phase and is set to be significantly expanded in 2023.

Constellation Invests in Safety and Operational Improvements with New IVA Monitoring Technology for Drilling Rig Operations

Constellation has been increasingly adopting new modernization systems for its operations and is now focused on reducing accidents and ensuring more safety in the daily lives of its employees.

The company is using IVA technology, which monitors and controls operations, pointing out actions that may be dangerous to prevent accidents in its offshore drilling projects.

The solution, pioneering in its operational use on a large scale in the drilling segment in Brazil, was developed by Metta Innovations at Petrobras Research and Innovation Center (Cenpes).

During January 2022, IVA technology began to be implemented in its initial steps on the drillship Laguna Star. Now, it is already present in a significant part of Constellation’s fleet, on the Gold Star, Lone Star, Amaralina Star, and Brava Star vessels.

To ensure better equipment performance, the IVA technology cameras are placed at strategic points on the drilling rigs.

In this way, when identifying risk situations, they automatically issue alerts regarding the improper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and warnings for employees in exclusion zones (red zone).

They also provide employees with statistics concerning identified risks, thereby ensuring the necessary data for quick decision-making in operations.

The system can also be customized to identify employees under a load or even to identify fallen employees on the ground, allowing for greater control over potential accidents on the platforms.

IVA Technology Operates Continuously on the Company’s Drilling Rigs, Ensuring More Safety in Employees’ Daily Lives

After detecting a risk situation or accident on Constellation’s drilling rigs, the IVA technology notifies the employee responsible for supervising the activity on board the unit, as well as issuing a warning through a secure channel directed to the control centers.

Additionally, it provides an audible alarm and a visual alert with a compilation of all information related to the situation, as well as an exact image of the moment that generated the alert.

This is a way for Constellation to unify its technology systems and ensure more safety in the daily lives of its employees.

Therefore, the company invested in a technology that operates fully, without maintenance, and that can still detect problems in adverse weather and lighting conditions.

Thus, the Quality, Safety, Environment, and Health Team (QSMS) has been significantly benefiting from increased safety and control of potential risks on Constellation’s offshore drilling rigs with the new IVA technology.
