The funding is part of a total of R$ 405 million dedicated to the Legal Amazon. The funds will be applied to machines, equipment, and operational bases to intensify the fight against wildfires. Moreover, the initiatives include training agents and educational campaigns to minimize the sources of burning in the region!
The BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) announced this Thursday (26) the release of R$ 180 million from the Amazon Fund for the fire departments of the states of Amapá, Amazonas, Pará, and Roraima. This amount is part of a total of R$ 405 million, approved at the end of last year, to support the corporations acting in prevention and combating wildfires in forest areas. Previously, Acre and Rondônia had already received funds for this purpose, according to the news site noticiasr7.
Supporting the Front Line Against Wildfires
The funding allocated by the Amazon Fund is essential for improving the infrastructure of the fire departments, responsible for facing wildfires in the Legal Amazon. More than 90% of the funds will go towards the purchase of equipment, such as trucks, drones, and other essential apparatuses. The construction of new operational bases is also included, with three in Amazonas and one battalion in Roraima. And it doesn’t stop there: the investment also involves improvements in existing facilities, helping to prepare firefighters to face increasingly significant challenges.
Furthermore, BNDES states that the funds will be used to train public agents, ensuring they know how to act quickly and efficiently in critical situations. Prevention will also be strengthened, with educational campaigns to raise public awareness about the risks of wildfires. After all, “prevention is better than cure,” isn’t it?

Wildfires That Do Not Give Quarters
Between September 1 and 25, the Amazon recorded 39,804 hotspots, according to data from Inpe (National Institute for Space Research). This equates to an average of 1,592 wildfires per day, an alarming number that has caused huge damages, estimated at R$ 14.7 billion across 2.8 million hectares of rural properties.

The federal government, recognizing the severity of the situation, also took an important step last week. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed a provisional measure that releases R$ 514 million for emergency firefighting actions. These funds will be distributed among various ministries, including Justice, Environment, and Defense, reinforcing the government’s action against the fires threatening the region.
Amazon Fund: A Force Behind The Investments
The Amazon Fund, managed by BNDES, is one of the main tools for financing the preservation of the Amazon. It was created with the aim of raising donations and applying these resources to prevention, combating deforestation and, of course, tackling the wildfires. With this R$ 405 million, the fund strengthens the actions of the states in the Legal Amazon, which need support to protect the largest tropical rainforest in the world.
It is no secret that the Amazon plays a vital role in the global climate balance, and wildfires there have a global impact. Hence the importance of initiatives like this, which focus on prevention and monitoring high-risk areas. Of course, with the educational campaigns, the government hopes that the population will collaborate, reducing the practice of illegal burning that harms the environment.
What to Expect for The Future?
With new bases, equipment, and better-trained agents, the expectation is that combating wildfires will become more efficient in the coming months. The goal of BNDES and the states of the Legal Amazon is not only to contain the ongoing wildfires but also to prevent new outbreaks. After all, the more structured the fire department is, the greater the chances of mitigating environmental damage and protecting the region’s biodiversity.
However, the challenge is great, and support from the public and organizations is crucial. The Amazon Fund will continue to be a key player in this fight, and with the recent release of R$ 180 million, the beneficiary states are better prepared to face a wildfire season.
So, the next time you hear about an action by the fire departments in the Amazon, remember: there is a lot of work, sweat, and dedication behind it, and now, with a little extra push from BNDES and the Amazon Fund.
