The BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) announced this Thursday (26) the release of R$ 180 million from the Amazon Fund for the fire departments of the states of Amapá, Amazonas, Pará, and Roraima. This amount is part of a total of R$ 405 million, approved at the end of last year, to support the corporations acting in prevention and combating wildfires in forest areas. Previously, Acre and Rondônia had already received funds for this purpose, according to the news site noticiasr7.
Supporting the Front Line Against Wildfires
The funding allocated by the Amazon Fund is essential for improving the infrastructure of the fire departments, responsible for facing wildfires in the Legal Amazon. More than 90% of the funds will go towards the purchase of equipment, such as trucks, drones, and other essential apparatuses. The construction of new operational bases is also included, with three in Amazonas and one battalion in Roraima. And it doesn’t stop there: the investment also involves improvements in existing facilities, helping to prepare firefighters to face increasingly significant challenges.
Furthermore, BNDES states that the funds will be used to train public agents, ensuring they know how to act quickly and efficiently in critical situations. Wildfires That Do Not Give Quarters
Between September 1 and 25, the Amazon recorded 39,804 hotspots, according to data from Inpe (National Institute for Space Research). This equates to an average of 1,592 wildfires per day, an alarming number that has caused huge damages, estimated at R$ 14.7 billion across 2.8 million hectares of rural properties.
The federal government, recognizing the severity of the situation, also took an important step last week. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed a provisional measure that releases R$ 514 million for emergency firefighting actions.
