Nuclear Legacy 2022 Highlights Publicly The Major Achievements And Personalities Of The Sector In Brazil; Mauricio Tolmasquim, Former Minister, Is A Confirmed Attendee
On November 16 and 17, the ABDAN (Brazilian Association for the Development of Nuclear Activities) will discuss the major achievements of the Brazilian nuclear sector and honor those who made a difference throughout 2022 at the event ‘Nuclear Legacy 2022’, held in a historic place in Rio de Janeiro, the Itamaraty Palace, in the city center. The event is held for select guests and has been taking place since 2017, making it one of the most recognized and respected in the sector in the country.
The event will feature participation from Mauricio Tolmasquim, former Minister of Mines and Energy of Brazil. An important figure in the sector, he was the president of the Energy Research Company, an entity affiliated with the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
For the president of the Association, Celso Cunha, the initiative to publicly highlight the major advances of the segment sheds light on its ability to transform the country. “This is the moment we declare that Brazil is ready and has the right people to advance its nuclear policies,” he states.

On the first day, there will be live debate rounds with representatives from ABDAN’s member companies on various topics in the sector, as well as lectures and presentations by prominent personalities in the field. On the second day, there will be an event to promote networking and celebrate significant initiatives in the nuclear scenario in 2022. Personalities in the sector will be honored in 6 categories: Nuclear Medicine, Institutional Relations, Communication, Development of the Nuclear Sector, Research and Innovation, Technology, and Defense.
Engineer Celso Cunha has been at the helm of ABDAN since 2017 and was re-elected for the period from 2022 to 2024. During his time leading the Association, Cunha, along with the board, has achieved significant advancements for the sector. The executive is vice president of the Electric Sector Associations Forum; of the Energy and Economic Development Councils of the Industrial Federation of the State of Rio, a member of the Economic Development Forum of the State Chamber of Deputies of Rio, and also a Counselor of the Latina American Section/ANS. He has served as Municipal Secretary of Economy, Energy Development, and Technology in various cities in the State of Rio de Janeiro, such as Paracambi, Nova Iguaçu, and Niterói.
Nuclear Sector Seen As Part Of The Solution To The Country’s Energy Challenges
Currently, nuclear energy accounts for 3% of the energy matrix in Brazil. Greenhouse gas emissions are virtually zero, as it releases neither carbon dioxide (CO2), nor sulfur, nor mercury into the environment. The country has the 7th largest uranium reserve in the world and has signaled plans to build 8 to 10 new plants by 2050.
A dual reactor plant covering about 400,000 square meters has the capacity to supply 2 million households. This is the case, for example, with Angra 1 and Angra 2, which together can provide electricity for over 3 million households. If a person used nuclear energy throughout their life, the resulting waste would be enough to fill just one soda can.
Nuclear Technology In Food And Medicine
A notable example of innovation in the power generation sector is the SMRs – Small Modular Reactors. Compact in size and with a simple integration plan, small modular reactors can replace the electrical output of many coal and gas plants, reducing emissions and reaching hard-to-access or remote locations.
In the food sector, we can highlight the conservation technique through exposure to ionizing radiation, which is less discussed here in Brazil but is very common in countries like the United States, Mexico, Australia, and various countries in Asia. It is a safe and simple technique, as the product can be treated in its final packaging, with no chemical additions.
Treating food with radiation not only prolongs its shelf life but also brings other benefits: it reduces pathogens and slows natural physiological processes, performs insect disinfestation, and ensures phytosanitary safety for export. It is a clean and safe process, and food treated with radiation is natural, healthy, and stays fresh longer.
In medicine, the sector also plays a strong role and is essential. However, Brazil is still progressing at a slower pace. Currently, the country relies on others to obtain raw materials. Nuclear technology plays a significant role in the medical sector with the production of medical isotopes for the development of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Every year, millions of patients worldwide benefit from nuclear medicine in diagnosis and treatment, such as for thyroid cancer.

About ABDAN:
ABDAN has been active for 35 years in the Brazilian market focused on supporting the nuclear segment. Its main objective is to foster a business environment and promote the development and application of nuclear technology in Brazil. The association comprises over 30 member companies – which are among the most significant in the segments of capital goods, nuclear medicine, construction and assembly, consulting and engineering, and operation of plants and manufacturing units of systems and equipment. It is the only association in the world that has an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency and the World Nuclear Association. https://abdan.org.br/
