Carried out on July 21, 2026, the NC Breda’s stop involved domestic cabotage cargoes and volumes classified as feeder, transported by coastal services to points where they can be transferred to other maritime routes.
According to information released by Norcoast, the inclusion of Rio de Janeiro expands the logistical connection between the Manaus Free Trade Zone and the Rio market, while integrating eight Brazilian ports into a regular coastal transport schedule.

Built in 2014, the container ship is part of a fleet of four vessels used by Norcoast in weekly services along the Brazilian coast and the Amazon Basin, all with a reported capacity of up to 3,500 TEUs for regular operations.
Cabotage route connects eight Brazilian ports
Upon arriving at the Port of Rio, the ship inserted the terminal into the same route that serves Manaus, Pecém, Suape, Salvador, Santos, Paranaguá, and Itajaí, forming a port sequence that reaches the North, Northeast, Southeast, and South regions of the country.
Departing from Manaus, the cargo can continue by coastal navigation to Rio de Janeiro, while goods shipped from the Rio terminal can access the same network of ports, serving national products and volumes destined for other maritime services.
This connection has direct relevance for companies located in the Manaus Free Trade Zone, responsible for the manufacturing and distribution of a wide variety of products, as it adds an entry point in the Southeast for cargo originating from the Amazonian capital.
In the opposite direction, the service can also receive goods produced in Rio de Janeiro and in areas connected to the terminal by other means of transport, including Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Greater São Paulo, and municipalities in the interior of São Paulo.
Rio Brasil Terminal combines maritime transport and railway
One of the central elements of this structure is the connection of Rio Brasil Terminal with the railway network, which allows combining maritime transport with the land movement of cargo and extending the scale reach beyond the Metropolitan Region of Rio.
The network includes the railway ramps of Floriano, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and Suzano, in São Paulo, in addition to the expanded structure in Alto Tietê, facilitating the transport of containers between the coast and industrial areas inland.
Through this system, containers landed at the port can continue their journey by train, while cargo produced far from the coast arrives at the terminal for shipment, forming a multimodal operation that maintains the same transport unit from origin to destination.
The regular service caters to production chains with different needs and, according to Norcoast, reaches sectors such as consumer goods, steel, and beverages, responsible for moving raw materials, industrialized products, packaging, and goods destined for distribution centers.
Cabotage and feeder cargo fulfill different functions
In cabotage, the ship transports cargo between ports located within the national territory, concentrating large volumes in a single maritime trip and distributing containers through terminals connected to the main production and consumption areas across the country.
Feeder cargo, on the other hand, fulfills a different function within port logistics, as they can arrive in Rio on a national service and be transferred to another vessel, or travel the reverse path after disembarking from a different route.
In this model, the terminal functions as a connection point between services that do not necessarily use the same ship throughout the journey, allowing the organized transfer of volumes between coastal scales, long-haul routes, and different maritime operators.
The first call of NC Breda marked the effective entry of Rio Brasil Terminal into the company’s schedule, and the Port of Rio began to appear in the regular calendar of vessels, indicating continuity of service rather than an isolated visit.
Norcoast maintains operations on the coast and in the Amazon region
Created as a joint venture between the Brazilian Norsul and the German Hapag-Lloyd, Norcoast focuses its activities on coastal container transportation, with scheduled operations reaching the Brazilian coast and the Amazon region.
In Rio de Janeiro, the operation uses the structure of the Rio Brasil Terminal, located in the organized port area, where shipments, landings, and necessary land connections are made to transport the cargo to factories, warehouses, and distribution centers.
Although the ship has a capacity for 3,500 TEUs, the company has not publicly disclosed how many containers were handled during the first stop in Rio, and the number associated with the vessel represents its maximum capacity, not the confirmed volume of the inaugural operation.
Maximum capacity does not represent unloaded volume
This difference is relevant because the quantity effectively loaded or unloaded varies according to demand, available space, container types, and the scheduling of other ports served, especially on a route with eight national stops.
Throughout the journey, part of the cargo may remain on board while new volumes are included or removed at each terminal, a dynamic that allows serving different markets without requiring the complete unloading of the ship at every stop.
Port of Rio expands reach of the national route
By adding a terminal close to important industrial and consumer markets in the Southeast, the incorporation of Rio de Janeiro modifies the geographical coverage of the service and keeps Manaus as one of the strategic endpoints of the national operation.
In this way, the production of the Free Trade Zone now has a direct link to ports distributed along a large part of the Brazilian coast, while the Rio terminal gains access to a regular network that crosses four regions of the country.
