Promoted by ABPM, the Gold Symposium and the Amazon Mining Fair will bring together in Belém companies, governments, and experts to discuss the challenges and best practices of ESG in the production, refining, and marketing of gold.
Gold is considered one of the safest financial assets in the global economy, backing the monetary reserves of various countries, being regarded as a store of value and safe haven in times of crisis and financial instability. And Brazil, which has one of the largest gold reserves in the world, can become a global player if it can organize its production and adopt international standards.
According to data from the National Mining Agency (ANM), in 2021, the value of gold production in the country reached R$ 24 billion, representing about 7% of Brazil’s mineral sector production. Experts predict that in the coming years, with new investments in research, new mines, and refineries in operation, this value could increase and contribute to the economy, generating new jobs, revenues for states and municipalities, and regional development.
However, the country’s major challenge is to ensure high ESG standards throughout the gold supply chain, from production and refining to marketing, which today suffers from international distrust caused by illicit activities, especially in the North region, which has enormous potential but suffers from such illegalities.

To discuss actions aimed at competitive, responsible gold mining committed to the environment and communities, and that incorporate new technologies, the Brazilian Association of Mineral Research and Mining Companies (ABPM) is holding the Gold Symposium – Brazil 2022 and the Amazon Mining Fair from August 23 to 25 in Belém.
The Gold Symposium – Brazil 2022 will gather executives from the country’s major gold mining companies, governments, experts, and professionals working in the gold production chain so that they can collectively discuss regulatory, technological, environmental aspects, governance initiatives, and share experiences and business opportunities.
“The growth of small and medium mining is a global trend. And ABPM has been a spokesperson for this segment of mining in Brazil, promoting a transparent dialogue with various stakeholders. We understand that the gold sector in Brazil needs special attention,” explains Luís Maurício Azevedo, president of ABPM.
According to Azevedo, it is necessary to discuss responsible business practices along the entire gold supply chain, and the event will be an opportunity to hold this debate, discussing investments in research, discovery of new deposits, opening new mines, in addition to case studies from companies that operate responsibly.
The chosen location to host the event was the state of Pará, one of the largest gold producers in the country, alongside Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Bahia, and Goiás. “The Gold Symposium will be an opportunity for companies, associations, and entities related to Brazilian gold activities to make contributions towards creating pillars committed to governance and compliance practices across the gold production chain in the country,” evaluates Maurício Gaioti, president of North Star, a company specializing in precious metal refining, which will inaugurate a modern refining unit in Belém in the second half, with a capacity to process 24 tons/year, gradually increasing its market participation.
Gaioti believes that the event will be an opportunity for people and entities committed to the legality of gold production in the country, which involves social, environmental, and economic issues, to show that this segment should not be confused with illegal activities that have been occurring in the country. “It is a great opportunity for us to demonstrate the high level of investment, rigor in procedures, and expertise that the country has in gold production,” evaluates Gaioti.
Promoted by ABPM, the Gold Symposium – Brazil 2022 and the Amazon Mining Fair have the support of various government institutions, corporate entities, and companies operating in the mineral sector.
