A scientific discovery conducted by researchers from Federal University of Pará (UFPA) put Brazil at the center of the global water security debate. Recent studies revealed that the country is home to the largest subterranean freshwater reserve ever identified on the planet. Named the Great Amazon Aquifer System (SAGA), this reservoir has an estimated volume sufficient to supply the entire global population for approximately 250 years.
This information was disclosed by researchers from UFPA and echoed in national scientific publications, highlighting the environmental and strategic impact of the discovery.
The Hidden Subterranean Giant Beneath the Amazon
For decades, it was believed that the main subterranean water reserve in the Amazon region was the Alter do Chão Aquifer. However, starting in 2013, more in-depth studies showed that the true extent of the system was much larger than previously thought.

Scientific data indicates that the SAGA contains approximately 162,520 km³ of freshwater, equivalent to more than 150 quadrillion liters, considering depths that can reach 500 meters. This impressive volume completely alters the perception of the subterranean water potential of the Amazon.
Moreover, the system extends beneath major watersheds in the region, including Marajó, Amazonas, Solimões, and Acre. Therefore, its coverage area is vast and strategic.
As a result, Brazil now possesses one of the largest subterranean freshwater reserves in the world, solidifying its environmental relevance on the international stage.
Larger Than the Guarani Aquifer with Global Impact
For comparison, the Guarani Aquifer, previously considered the largest in the world, has around 39,000 km³ and spans Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay. However, the estimated volume of the SAGA is more than four times greater.
This difference is not just numerical. On the contrary, it represents a gigantic strategic potential. Although the Amazon holds a large portion of Brazil’s freshwater, only about 5% of the Brazilian population lives in the region.
Currently, the SAGA already contributes to the supply of important cities like Manaus and Santarém. However, experts indicate that its role could expand in the future, especially in scenarios of global water scarcity.
Additionally, the aquifer may strengthen agricultural irrigation and reinforce urban supply, especially in light of climate change and the increasing demand for natural resources.
Strategic Potential and Environmental Alert
Despite the impressive volume, scientists emphasize that any exploration should occur with extreme caution. Professor Francisco Matos from the Institute of Geosciences at UFPA warns that expanded use must respect the Amazonian hydrological cycle.
This is because the SAGA is not merely a colossal freshwater reservoir. It also integrates one of the most complex and sensitive ecosystems on the planet.
Therefore, while the discovery represents a strategic advantage for Brazil, it also imposes environmental responsibility. Preserving the Amazon is not limited to the visible forest. It also involves protecting one of the largest subterranean freshwater reserves on Earth.
Thus, the Great Amazon Aquifer System not only reinforces Brazil’s role in the global environmental debate but also heightens the need for sustainable policies to ensure that this water heritage benefits future generations.

Ao pessoal que está preocupado com os aquíferos, segundo a constituição os aquíferos brasileiros NÃO PODEM SER VENDIDOS!!!!. Na Constituição Federal e a Lei das Águas (Lei nº 9.433/1997), a água é um bem público, inalienável e de domínio público, proibindo qualquer forma de privatização dos recursos hídricos, incluindo o Aquífero Guarani. Então mesmo que tenhamos um presidente como Tarcísio que vende e privatiza tudo, ele não poderia passar por cima da constituição. Qualquer tentativa de vender esses recursos já iria nascer com vício e portanto sem validade. Sendo obrigação do STF anular qualquer negociação nesse sentido por inconstitucionalidade.
Isso se a constituição federal servisse pra alguma coisa além de limpar o **** dos ministros do supremo, né?
No cenário atual, eles (os ministros em pessoa) SÃO as leis. Eles fazem as leis. Ignoram totalmente a constituição e/ou alteram trechos conforme melhor lhes convir. Portanto, quem for amigo dos ministros pode fazer oque quiser!

A empresa tem uma CONCESSÃO para exploração da mesma assim como acontece com o petróleo. Pra você ter uma ideia até mesmo o EUA depende da China porquê a China é a única que tem a tecnologia para beneficiar as terras raras em grande quantidade do mundo
