Ocyan SMART, Advanced Real Time Monitoring System, Has Been Operating for Almost a Year and Is the First in Brazil to Operate in Six Dimensions
Rio de Janeiro, October 7, 2019 – Ocyan has achieved significant results since the implementation of SMART (Advanced Real Time Monitoring System). In less than a year, the system that monitors the company’s drilling rigs from the company’s base, which predicts intensive use of artificial intelligence based on integrated data and images generated by cameras, has contributed to an improvement in operational performance (uptime) by 2.5%, increasing from 92.8 to 95.1 compared to last year, and to a reduction of approximately 80% in the rate of recordable incidents, such as, for instance, lost-time accidents.

“SMART is the first integrated system for monitoring drilling activities in Brazil to cover the six anticipated dimensions, allowing the aggregation of data that was previously dispersed across separate supervisory systems. We have now been able to integrate and make data related to drilling, well control, power management, dynamic positioning, in addition to the internal TV circuit cameras on the platforms, among others, available. By processing and analyzing data from all these dimensions in an integrated manner, we have enhanced the control of the vessel as a whole. The result has been increased productivity and process safety due to enhanced capacity and speed in decision-making,” explains Rodrigo Chamusca, responsible for the Support and Decision Center (CSD) and Digital Transformation at Ocyan’s Drilling Business Unit.
Ocyan SMART has also contributed to keeping the company’s drilling rigs performing well in Sondópolis (used by Petrobras). “All of this adds value to the service we provide and helps in the pursuit of new contracts, as it demonstrates Ocyan’s advanced, innovative, and bold profile. Ocyan SMART allows for quick responses to everyday challenges. Innovations in artificial intelligence, such as machine learning algorithms developed by our data scientists, will benefit our clients,” Chamusca points out.

The company has already invested around R$ 1 million per rig to operate in the five dimensions (Drilling/MPD, Well Control, Dynamic Positioning (DP), Power Management (PMS), and Monitoring (CCTV)), and plans to soon reach six. The Monitoring of BOP (Subsea) is expected to be added to the scope of Ocyan SMART still this year, demonstrating the company’s pioneering spirit in seeking technological and innovative solutions. The system also allows the activities of the rigs, through operational data and cameras, to be monitored from any computer, not just from the base in Macaé.
Partnerships to Add Value
To expand the use of artificial intelligence, Ocyan recently signed a contract with Intelie, the Brazilian subsidiary of American group RigNet, allowing the use of the Intelie Live platform. This is the system that integrates monitoring for the entire fleet of drilling platforms for the company.
“The system combines efficient big data analytics, machine learning, and IoT (Internet of Things) solutions. Together, they will enable the implementation of CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) to extend the lifecycle of critical equipment and develop a real-time risk assessment and management methodology (Bow Tie) to monitor the conditions of mitigation barriers and prevent severe accidents,” he emphasizes. With this new reality, equipment maintenance can be based on predictions, enhancing Ocyan’s competitive edge.
Another innovation front is the partnership with startups that are already developing pilot projects for Ocyan’s Support and Decision Center, based on technology focused on the offshore segment. “Today, we have two partner startups developing projects for BOP and drill pipe. Both are advancing their respective projects with us in an excellent exchange,” Chamusca celebrates.
Name Change
SMART (Advanced Monitoring System in Real Time) is the new name of Ocyan Live, chosen through a contest in which 165 names competed, based on suggestions from 42 members of Ocyan itself.
