United States Invest Billions in Building the Largest Clean Energy Project in the West, Capable of Producing Up to 3,000 MW.
The construction of the largest clean energy project in the United States and the West, known as SunZia, began last week. This initiative, located in the Southwest of the U.S., secured an investment of US$ 11 billion. The project aims to create a comprehensive system that includes turbines and clean energy generation, as well as an efficient transmission system.
Investment in Clean Energy Could Generate US$ 20.5 Billion in the Economy
The SunZia project, which is being developed by Pattern Energy, and is the largest in the sector in the U.S. and the West, employs over 2,000 workers in construction, heavy equipment, labor, and other areas. Additionally, more than 100 job opportunities will be permanent.
According to Electrek, the investment in the wind farm will be built in Torrance, Lincoln, and San Miguel counties in the state of New Mexico and will produce 3,500 megawatts. According to the company, the clean energy is expected to reach 3 million people and generate US$ 20.5 billion in the economy.

Pattern Energy’s Executive Vice President, Daniel Elkort, highlights the potential of clean energy projects to attract capital and financing. SunZia will be divided into two phases. The first is SunZia Wind, the wind turbine and power generation arm built in the three counties of New Mexico.
The second phase of the investment is SunZia Transmission, which will transmit high-voltage current from the generation site to central-southern Arizona, nearly 900 km away. When completed, the project will produce around 3,000 MW of clean energy from one state to another in the U.S.
Clean Energy Project Orders 242 Wind Turbines
Pattern Energy Group, responsible for SunZia, has made a historic order of 242 wind turbines from Vestas. This is the largest global order for Vestas’ new high-capacity turbine. Construction of the park began in 2023, with turbine delivery expected in the first quarter of 2025, and commercial operations anticipated in the first half of 2026.
Pattern Energy’s Executive Vice President, Daniel Elkort, emphasizes the capability of clean energy projects to attract capital and financing. SunZia, with its magnitude and scope, represents a significant step for the U.S. in advancing clean and renewable energy, creating an optimistic outlook for the sector’s future.
It is noteworthy that the EPC contractor for the transmission line is Quanta Infrastructure Services Group, and the HVDC supplier is Hitachi Energy. The EPC contractor for the wind project is Blattner Energy, an affiliate of Quanta. The wind turbines are being supplied by GE Vernova and Vestas.
Company Comments on Project with Billion-Dollar Investment
According to the CEO of Pattern Energy, Hunter Armistead, the company’s hope is that this successful funding of the largest clean energy infrastructure project in American history serves as an example for other ambitious renewable infrastructure initiatives needed to drive the transition to a carbon-free future. The executive emphasizes that Pattern Energy is very grateful to all its financial partners who support SunZia as part of this record project financing.
The construction of this historic investment is well underway and will provide clean energy with a generation profile that complements the abundant solar generation available throughout the western U.S. This funding is proof of the commitment of its financial partners to the renewable energy space and to Pattern.
The size and scale of the SunZia project and this multifaceted financing show that the renewable energy space can attract appealing capital at levels previously seen only in traditional generation.
