Did You Know That In Brazil There Are More Cattle Than People? It May Seem Exaggerated Or A Joke, But It Is The Pure Truth. The Numbers Do Not Lie.

According to data from IBGE and agricultural institutions, the Brazilian cattle herd exceeded 238 million heads in 2023. Meanwhile, the human population is around 213 million inhabitants. In other words, there is almost 1.12 cattle for each Brazilian.

Where Are All These Cattle?

Most of these animals live far from the large urban centers. The states with the highest concentration are Mato Grosso, Pará, and Goiás, but it is in the region called Legal Amazon that the situation draws more attention: there, almost half of the national herd is scattered among forests, pastures, and farms. In states like Rondônia, the number of cattle can be more than 10 times greater than the number of people.

How Did Brazil Get To This Point?

The growth of livestock farming in the country follows a long history of agricultural frontier expansion. Since the 1970s, the Brazilian herd has more than doubled. Cattle has become one of the main engines of the rural economy, responsible for billions in meat, leather, and derivative exports.

The Other Side of The Coin: Environment and Emissions

But this success comes with serious challenges. Intensive cattle raising is now one of the main sources of methane emissions, an extremely potent greenhouse gas. It is estimated that about 75% of Brazil’s emissions of this gas come from livestock.

Furthermore, vast areas of Amazon rainforest and Cerrado have been converted into pastures. Just between 2009 and 2023, over half a million hectares of native vegetation were deforested to make way for cattle.

What Is Being Done?

To try to balance production and sustainability, some states, like Pará, have begun to implement cattle tracking systems. This helps to identify if the animal has passed through areas of illegal deforestation, pressuring slaughterhouses and producers to adopt more responsible practices.

Techniques such as integrated crop-livestock systems, rotational grazing, and supplemental feeding are also being adopted to reduce emissions per animal and increase productivity per hectare.

And The Future?

Having more cattle than people can be seen as a symbol of the strength of Brazilian agribusiness — but it also serves as a warning. To what extent is this expansion sustainable? The challenge now is to reconcile production, preservation, and environmental responsibility.

And you? Did you already know there are more cattle than people in Brazil?

Só que bois são abatidos para a indústria alimentícia então são mortos para alimentar pessoas enquanto as pessoas não, nesse caso ficam elas por elas e ainda gera renda para o país
