With a Monumental Structure, A History of Over 130 Years and a Community of Almost 9,000 People, the State Institute of Education (IEE) Establishes Itself as the Largest Public School in Brazil.
The State Institute of Education (IEE), in Florianópolis (SC), is more than an educational institution; it is a true colossus of national education. Its reputation as the largest public school in Brazil is supported not only by its long and rich history but also by numbers and a physical structure that impress and stand out in the country.
Founded to be a pillar of teacher training in Santa Catarina, the IEE grew over the decades to become an unparalleled educational complex. The analysis of its trajectory confirms the grandeur of a project that is a source of pride for Brazilian education.
The Foundation in 1892
The history of the largest public school in Brazil begins at the end of the 19th century. On June 10, 1892, the then governor of Santa Catarina, Lieutenant Manoel Joaquim Machado, founded the institution under the name of Escola Normal Catarinense. According to historical documents from the school itself, the goal, since its origin, was to be a pillar in the training of qualified teachers and in the “greatness and growth of the homeland”.

The Consolidation in a Monumental Structure in 1964

The perception of the school’s magnitude was materialized in 1964, during the government of Celso Ramos. It was in this year that the imposing current headquarters on Avenida Mauro Ramos was inaugurated, a project that was born with the ambition to be grand. The main structure, with its 22,000 m² of built area, gave the school a unique physical presence.
In 1993, the complex grew even more with the definitive incorporation of the Rozendo Lima Sports Complex, which, according to sources from the institution itself, added another 5,000 m² to its already vast area, reinforcing the foundation for its reputation as the largest school.
The Numbers of IEE in 2024
The scale of the IEE is better understood through its current numbers. The official data from the 2024 School Census, conducted by INEP (an agency of the Ministry of Education), records 4,857 students enrolled in regular education (elementary and high school).
However, the institution itself clarifies that its community is much larger. Including participants of extension courses, cultural activities, and sports projects, the universe of people served daily by the IEE reaches almost 9,000 people. It is this vibrant and numerous community that positions it as the largest public school in Brazil in terms of outreach and people served.
A Scale Comparison in the National Scenario

In Brazil, there are no official rankings that compare schools by physical size or number of students. The focus of the Ministry of Education and INEP is on quality indicators, such as Enem and Ideb scores.
However, the combination of the vast built area of 27,000 m² (adding the headquarters and the sports complex) and the community of almost 9,000 people served places the IEE at a scale level that, according to the institution itself and local media, is unmatched by other public schools in the country, solidifying its claim to the title.
The Legacy of an Icon of Catarinense Education
The history of the State Institute of Education is that of an institution that was born to be great. Over more than 130 years, it has not only fulfilled its mission of training generations of people from Santa Catarina but also become a symbol of pride for Florianópolis and the entire state.
Its imposing structure and the immense community that attends it daily are living proof of its importance, living up to its reputation as the largest public school in Brazil.

Não somente a maior do Brasil, mas da américa latina.
