With A Billion-Dollar Investment And Pre-Salt Technology, The State-Owned Company Is Extracting Hundreds Of Millions Of Barrels More From One Of Its Most Iconic Assets: Marlim

One of the most important and oldest oil fields in Brazil is undergoing a true “resurrection.” The Marlim cluster, a giant of the post-salt, is at the center of the world’s largest project to revitalize mature deep-water assets. Petrobras is using the latest technology, developed for the pre-salt, to give new life to this iconic field in the Campos Basin.

The initiative is already showing impressive results. With the installation of two new, modern platforms, production has resumed with full force, ensuring the extraction of hundreds of millions of barrels that were previously considered unviable. The project, which will last until 2030, is a global success story in asset management and redefines the future of oil production in Brazil.

The New Machines In Marlim, The Anna Nery And Anita Garibaldi Platforms

The heart of the first phase of the Marlim revitalization project consists of two new giant floating platforms, known as FPSOs. The FPSO Anna Nery began production in May 2023, followed by the FPSO Anita Garibaldi, which started operating in August 2023. Together, they have the capacity to produce 150,000 barrels of oil per day.

Petrobras’s strategy was to replace nine older, less efficient platforms with just these two state-of-the-art units. The initiative was so successful that it received the Distinguished Achievement Award, the most important award in the offshore oil industry, during the OTC conference in Houston, USA, in May 2024.

What The Revitalization Of This Field In The Campos Basin Has Already Delivered?

The results of the first phase of the revitalization of Marlim are concrete and on a large scale. The project has managed to extend the productive life of the Marlim and Voador fields, which were expected to be deactivated, by an additional 23 years, ensuring continuous operation until 2048.

The extra volume of oil that will be produced thanks to this modernization is enormous: it is estimated that the new platforms will enable the production of 860 million barrels of oil equivalent that would otherwise be left behind. In addition to the production gain, the project also brought a significant environmental benefit, with a projected 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the old system.

The FPSO P-86 Project

With the success of the first phase, Petrobras is already planning the next step: the revitalization of the Marlim Sul and Marlim Leste fields. This project, which represents Phase 2 of the initiative, involves the installation of a new, even more modern platform, named FPSO P-86.

The bidding for the contracting of the new unit was announced at the end of 2024. The expectation is that the P-86 will begin production in 2030, integrating what remains in both fields. Although the exact volume has not been disclosed, the scale of the project suggests it will be responsible for extracting hundreds of millions of barrels of oil, securing the future of this important field in the Campos Basin.

The Secret Of Resurrection

The key to the success of this project is knowledge transfer. Petrobras is applying the same “playbook” technology in Marlim that has made it a world leader in pre-salt exploration. Technologies such as 4D Seismic, which allows us to “see” the movement of oil in the reservoir, and intelligent completion wells, which can be remotely controlled from the mainland, are being used to maximize extraction.

This technological revolution is supported by massive investment. Petrobras plans to invest between US$ 22 and US$ 23 billion in the Campos Basin until 2029, proving that, with the right technology, even the oldest fields can have a bright and productive future.
