A Memorandum of Understanding Seals the Partnership for Offshore Wind Generation in Rio de Janeiro

TotalEnergies, in partnership with the Government of Rio de Janeiro, takes a decisive step towards the future of renewable energy in Brazil. Signed on May 26, 2023, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) proposes a collaboration dedicated to the development of offshore wind generation in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It is important to remember that the French company and Petrobras are keeping an eye on the possible auction that will take place in 2024 in this market segment.

With a validity of two years, this agreement encompasses studies related to tax incentives as well as the growth of the grid system for future projects.

An Alliance Strengthened by Environmental Commitment

“This commitment with the Government is exciting because it reinforces TotalEnergies’ synergy with the expansive movement of the offshore wind market”, declares Charles Fernandes, General Director of TotalEnergies EP Brazil and Country Chair of the Company in Brazil. The partnership, according to Fernandes, is in harmony with the company’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and to invest in the long term in the country.

TotalEnergies has been evaluating areas for environmental licensing of offshore wind projects in Brazil since last year. At the end of 2022, the company announced an MoU with Prumo Logística, controlled by EIG and responsible for the development of Porto do Açu, aiming at the installation of logistic support bases for future wind projects of TotalEnergies.

TotalEnergies in Brazil: History and Operations

With nearly half a century of presence in Brazil, TotalEnergies operates through six subsidiaries and employs over 3,500 people in various business areas, including exploration and production, gas, renewable energies (solar and wind), lubricants, chemicals, and distribution.

Its Exploration & Production portfolio includes ten licenses, four of which are operated by the company itself. Additionally, in December 2022, TotalEnergies secured a new non-operated block for exploration in deep waters, in the Campos Basin (Água Marinha, 30%). The Production Sharing Contract is expected to be signed in the first half of 2023.

Towards Sustainability: TotalEnergies and Renewable Energy

TotalEnergies is committed to the growth of the renewable energy sector in Brazil. Its subsidiary, Total Eren, operates 300 MW in solar and wind projects. In October 2022, a partnership was established with Casa dos Ventos, a leader in the renewable energy market in Brazil, to jointly develop a renewable energy portfolio of 12 GW.

In the Brazilian fuel distribution market, TotalEnergies has a presence with a network of approximately 240 service stations and several installations for the storage of petroleum products and ethanol.
