The Project to Resume the 3rd Shift at the Toyota Plant in São Paulo Confirmed the Need to Open 100 New Job Positions at the Facility

Toyota announced today, Wednesday (09/29), that it will advance the start date of the third shift at the Sorocaba plant, in the interior of São Paulo state, to November 29. With the return of the shift, two years after its end, the automaker estimates the creation of new job positions in the city. The Japanese automaker is resuming a shift that had been terminated in August 2019 to produce three models of vehicles. New Job Positions at Toyota’s Plant in São Paulo

According to the company, a review of the project to resume the third shift at the Sorocaba plant in São Paulo confirmed the need to open 100 new job positions at the facility, totaling 550 new employees who are already in the hiring process to meet the needs of a third shift at the plant.

Rafael Chang, President of Toyota Brazil, stated that “Since we gathered the conditions to implement the 3rd shift in Sorocaba, it was our intention to start as soon as possible, and I am happy to make this announcement now, helping Brazil offer more jobs. We are all eager to welcome the new employees in Sorocaba who will assist us in our mission to produce increasingly better cars.”

Increase in Production

According to the company, the new shift is expected to increase the annual production volume by approximately 30%, from the current 122,000 units to 158,000 units. The additional production will primarily meet the demand for the Corolla Cross in the Brazilian market and in countries in the region, considering that the SUV produced here is sold in over 22 countries. The plant is also responsible for producing the Yaris and Etios models – the latter solely for export.

The announcement was received with surprise and considerable optimism, given the delicate situation many automakers in the country are facing due to the global shortage of components. Recently, the same Toyota plant in Sorocaba had to be completely halted due to a lack of semiconductors. At that time, the brand had no choice but to grant collective vacations between August 18 and 27.

Toyota Announced the Return of the 3rd Shift Earlier This Month

Toyota announced on 09/02 that it will reopen a third work shift at the Sorocaba plant in São Paulo state starting in January. The Japanese automaker, which was little affected by the semiconductor crisis, will operate on a 24-hour schedule, hiring 450 employees starting this month. An additional 50 jobs will be created at other units of the group, and 350 in the local supply chain.

As mentioned previously, in an interview with Jornal Cruzeiro do Sul, Toyota Brazil informed on July 6 that it was already exploring the possibility of resuming the 3rd shift at the Sorocaba factory beginning next year. At that time, the company had not confirmed the potential new jobs to be created at the plant, but speculation estimated that 400 jobs would be generated.
